About this listen
If you don't know Simon Scarrow, you don't know Rome!
The Eagle's Prophecy is the powerful sixth novel in Simon Scarrow's best-selling Eagles of the Empire series. Perfect for fans of Bernard Cornwell.
The Adriatic Sea, AD 45. Cato and Macro, centurions of the Roman army, are horrified to learn that they face possible execution after the death of their commanding officer. Fortunately, the Emperor's secretary is willing to offer them an alternative: to join the marines and hunt down a band of brutal pirates who are decimating not only Rome's reputation, but also a critical supply chain.
As they discover the true horror of battle at sea, Macro and Cato must also remember their real mission: to recover from those pirates a set of scrolls that hold secrets vital to the future of the Roman Empire. Rome will do anything to get them back....

Another great book by Scarrow!!
Enjoyed the story immensely but I found it difficult to adjust to the different narrator. Giving Macro a scouse accent made me cringe everytime he spoke. He also changed the pronunciation of 'Vespasian' and it just didn't sound correct.

Best One So Far!
Don't get me wrong, the first 5 books in the Eagle Series were plenty exciting enough, but the change of location came just in time to stop things becoming 'samey'. And along with the change of location, Scarrow seems to have knocked things up a gear. With the others, I was happy enough to listen as time-fillers, but with The Eagle's Prophecy, I actively made time to listen, and very much looked forward to the opportunity of finding out what was going to happen next. Plenty of skirmishes, plenty of close scrapes, plenty of victory being snatched from the jaws of defeat. A good old-fashioned Boys-Own adventure.
A quick word about Russel Boulter. If I'm honest, I prefered David Thorpe. Can't really say why. Boulter is a damn good storyteller; he has all the voices, all the weapons in his narrator's armory, but I just thought Thorpe's voice better suited Scarrow's work. Possibly that's just a personal opinion.
Lastly, to be a bit nitpicky, Boulter can be inconsistent/incorrect with the pronunciation of some of the historical terms and names, but we can forgive him that.

It was good!
I liked the story as it took a different approach to the story of Cato and Macro but I feel the performance just wasn't as good as the other 2 narrators.
I will say though, I think the narrator was good for the tone of this particular story as it was all pretty much doom and gloom for Cato and Macro at the beginning of the book, it was just the battles where the narrator could have improved

Entertaining story
Continue to enjoy the books but not keen on this narrator’s version of Macro. In the last books he seemed nice, but now he’s just angry and not very likeable.

Good but awkward narration
Another scarrow classic but narrator couldn’t pronounce roman names and offputting pronunciation of A . Eg: ‘Clare sick ‘ instead of classic. Annoying.

Pirates vs Rome
Great story and takes the series spiralling deeper into some background story plots.
Interesting weaving in the pirates and a break from the total war of the first 5 books. I’m excited to see what happens next (it’s downloading now!).
My personal pet peeves with a change of narrator is when the regional accent changes. Macro here seems to have become slightly more northern than the Londoner he was in the first books.
That said it’s great and you just have to get used
To it.
For about 1 minute I was annoyed with the. Ew voice of Vespasian, but I encourage you just imagine Christian Bale and the dark night and you can’t help but laugh. It’s awesome!
Great job all round!! Thoroughly recommend!

Another great episode of Cato & Macro
Another fantastic tale with twists and turns only made better by the revealing hints for the bigger series of books. A great listen and another one of the series ticked off!

Great Performance and Story
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?
I am a big fan of Simon Scarrow's Macro & Cato series of books, I have read all of his books and listening to the books again as a way of refreshing my memory. I found the audio version of the book to be very good.
