Summary

Was your mother too busy, too tired, or too checked out to provide you with the nurturing you needed as a child? Men and women who were "undermothered" as children often struggle with intimate relationships, in part because of their unmet need for maternal care.

The Emotionally Absent Mother will help you understand what was missing from your childhood, how this relates to your mother's own history, and how you can fill the "mother gap" by:

  • Examining the past with compassion for yourself and your mother
  • Finding the child inside of you and learning to mother yourself
  • Opening to the archetype of the good mother
  • Allowing friends and loved ones to provide support, guidance, and other elements of good mothering that you missed

Psychotherapist Jasmin Lee Cori traces perceived personal "defects" back to mothering deficits, relieving self-blame. And by teaching today's undermothered adults to cultivate the mothering they missed, she helps them secure happier futures - for themselves and their children.

"This book is a revelation to those of us whose mothering was short of what we needed." (Connie Dawson, PhD, coauthor of Growing Up Again: Parenting Ourselves, Parenting Our Children)

So helpful

This book really has help to relieve the sense of guilt I'd been feeling at not being able to get along with my now needy recently widowed mother.
I finally understand the mechanics of our relationship and I'm able to be more relaxed about it being just what it is and knowing it's not my fault I'm not a bad daughter!

Life changing for mental health

This book has completely reshaped my perspective on life and my relationships. It’s helped me categorise everything that did (and didn’t but should have) happened in my childhood. As a result I no longer feel defective and it’s helped me understand the context of my childhood and my life in a more objective way.

An excellent book

I learnt so much from this book. I’ve listened to it at least twice now.

The reader is also very soothing and the perfect accompaniment to it.

Just brilliant

Deep and touching upon so many issues. I've got years' experience going to therapy and reading self-help book, but this one has been a revelation. It actually answered every single question I had and I've learned so much about myself. A real eye-opener and a great self-discovery journey supported by excellent advice. Really enjoyed reading this book!

What a missed opportunity

I was looking forward to understand, in simple terms, how I can recognise and change some of my patterns probably due to an early separation with my mother. Instead I find yet another terrorist book on the irreparable effects I as a woman inflict on my child - btw Well done fathers somehow you're totally excused! If there are any useful nuggets they're deeply buried under the rubble... Don't waste your time.
