Editor reviews

British journalist, author and left-wing political activist Owen Jones has written a revealing exposition of the U.K political and media systems in his best-selling new-release The Establishment, which has been narrated in this unabridged audiobook edition by Jonathan Keeble. The quality of Jones’ research is profound. Find out enlightening details of the secret system behind the system, of the immensely powerful, faceless and nameless figures in control of the media. The more you listen to this incredible audio, the more you realise just how little is known about the systems governing the very fabric of the society in which we live and trust in. Available now from Audible.

Summary

Behind our democracy lurks a powerful but unaccountable network of people who wield massive power and reap huge profits in the process. In exposing this shadowy and complex system that dominates our lives, Owen Jones sets out on a journey into the heart of our Establishment, from the lobbies of Westminster to the newsrooms, boardrooms and trading rooms of Fleet Street and the City. Exposing the revolving doors that link these worlds, and the vested interests that bind them together, Jones shows how, in claiming to work on our behalf, the people at the top are doing precisely the opposite. In fact, they represent the biggest threat to our democracy today - and it is time they were challenged.

Compelling, articulate and timely

Superb book, superb narration. Essential reading/listening for anyone with more than a slight suspicion that the status quo is profoundly corrupt.

Despite it’s title this isn’t a standard lefty-boo

Despite it’s title this isn’t a standard lefty-book (and that's a good thing)

- The establishment aren’t a class-based group or even based around people as in the past, but it is now all about an ideology
- It could be easily be used as a readable introduction for young people to politics.
- Actually I think many on the right would feel flattered by the book which applauds their cleverness/deviousness
- It’s based on many 1st sources from the establishment themselves. Many people hanging themselves by what comes out of their mouths.
- A really engaging friendly style typical of the author’s TV persona

It’s a great book which reading now helps me understand just why Blair became so descreditted and why Jeremy Corbyn won the leadership election.

Whilst Owen is a good presenter, to have him reading the audiobook would have been a mistake. The actor reading is excellent, mimicking a wide variety of accents. Despite the apparently dry subject, I was absolutely transfixed and kept missing motorway junctions !

Would love to see an updated edition now that Corbyn is Labour Leader

a story worth telling

this book seemed to fit together the jigsaw pieces of names, events and news stories that we all know, but into a narrative that makes some sense -instead of a never ending stream of dramatic headlines and political spin. hard to hear some of the testimony as it's so disheartening if true. well written, some of the voices used by Jonathan Keeble are a little annoying, but I still enjoyed the ride.

An essential read

A well written book, with clear and concise argument. The importance and passion is evident and found myself agreeing with the author on all points made. It should awaken anyone from political apathy and start looking at what is really going on with the British Establishment.

What sort of people are we

This book really opens up what we have become in the 21st century! But we can change what we are now! There is no famine, plague or war in England. We have to stop the State being stripped of its wealth and power.

Especially well written and Narrated

Fee like a amazing amount of research and interviews have gone into this work

Gives a very strong case for the current establishment is not working and providing a fare balance to all people - however it's not a left wing rant
