Story
Alex Green is four years old when she first sees a dragon. In her next-door neighbour's garden, in the spot where the old lady usually sits, is a huge dragon, an astonished expression on its face before it opens its wings and soars away across the rooftops. And Alex doesn't see the little old lady after that. No one mentions her. It's as if she's never existed. Then Alex's mother disappears and reappears a week later, one quiet Tuesday, with no explanation whatsoever as to where she has been. But she is a ghostly shadow of her former self and with scars across her body.

I wish I could give more stars
This book deserves to win an accolade. The writing is sublime, the characters are rich, the story is like a classic fairytale. its such a tender, ethereal and heartbreaking tale of love and whatever love may mean to us. It's about creation. the world's and lives we create and the ones that are created for us. it's about so much more. too much to attempt to describe here. sometimes when I hear a good audio book I wish I had read it first, but not on this occasion. the narration needs it's own special mention because its the best I've heard on ANY audio book. it's hard to believe it's one person doing the characters. Her tone matches the feel of the book beautifully.
A true classic.

Exceptional, however old you are...
She is here... she is here...she is here.....
Kelly Barnhill's tale of magic, monsters, witches and dragons is so much more than I might have hoped. The prose is poetic and often achingly beautiful. The characters are clear, strong and engaging and the story is gentle, horrifying, tender and compelling. Christina Moore's narration is one of the best I've heard; frequently with audiobooks I find myself re-imagining how the characters might otherwise sound, Christina's fabulous voice and engagement with the story meant that no such 'editing' was needed or appropriate.
I can't recommend this enough as a 43 year-old man and my 11 year-old daughter agrees.

Loved it!
Such a wonderful, terrible, heartwarming and heartbreaking story for children of all ages.
Best narration I've ever heard!? Her different voices made the characters come to life. Truly theatrical!
It's about magic, and sorrow. Death, and childhood, and growing up. Hope, love, wonder, and the mother-daughter bond (if you like the Disney movie Brave you'll love this!!). And yet it's more fun and silly than sobby! The good-vs-evil divide is complex, and isn't quite defined until the end.
Definitely making my 7th grade classroom listen through this!

Magic is real
Kelly Barnhill caught my attention first as a short story writer aimed for adults (highly recommend her “Dreadful Young Ladies”!), but she turned out to be just as brilliant as a fairy tale creator.
On of her prose’s peculiarities I can’t but mention is the ability to showcase most outrageous, horrendous human actions, not glossing over them, but making them palatable, letting a reader bitterly chuckle instead of be angry or desperate.
There may seem to be too many characters or plot threads, but in the end every single path we step upon leads to the conclusion. And stories within the stories manage not only to convey the importance of storytelling as a basic human act, but also to enrich lore and connect all the characters. Oh! And of course, the language! Its such a pleasure to dive into.
