Story
It was a typical evening at a mall outside Portland, Maine. Three teenage friends waited for the movie to start. A boy flirted with the girl selling sunglasses. Mothers and children shopped together, and the manager at the video game store tended to customers. Then the shooters arrived. The chaos and carnage lasted only eight minutes before the killers were taken down. But for those who lived through it, the effects would last forever.

Jennifer Worth came from a sheltered background when she became a midwife in the Docklands in the 1950s. The conditions in which many women gave birth just half a century ago were horrifying, not only because of their grimly impoverished surroundings, but also because of what they were expected to endure. But while Jennifer witnessed brutality and tragedy, she also met with amazing kindness and understanding, tempered by a great deal of Cockney humour.

Another great story based on true events …
- By Anonymous User on 27-09-21
Summary
The bestselling author of The Designer presents a sweeping story of blind faith, family allegiance and how love makes one man question everything he thought he knew.
Max Wolff is a committed soldier of the Reich. So when he is sent home wounded, only to discover that his mother is sheltering two young Jewish women in their home, he is outraged.
His mother’s act of mercy is a gross betrayal of everything Max stands for. He has dedicated his life to Nazism, fighting to atone for the shame of his anti-Hitler father’s imprisonment. It’s his duty to turn the sisters over to the Gestapo. But he hesitates, and the longer Max fails to do his duty, the harder it becomes.
When Allied bombers fill the skies of Germany, Max is forced to abandon all dogma and face the brutality of war in order to defend precious lives. But what will it cost him?

Absolutely brilliant
This had me hooked from start to finish. I’ve read a lot of ww2 novels but I think this is the first I’ve read which delves into wartime Germany from a non-Jewish German’s perspective, as in the case of Magda and Max… a beautiful but tragic tale, with Jewish Lola’s heart wrenchingly sad story told beautifully, and which was narrated masterfully. I don’t think I’ve ever really realised the dreadful effect of the Dresden bombings and the final months of battle on ‘normal Germans’. Highly recommend this book

didn’t her mother teach her any manners?
This might have been a decent story if that spoilt brat Lola hadn’t been in it. Didn’t her mother teach her any manners? Lola is, along with her sister, a guest in a house during a time when great risks were run to protect Jews of which Lola and Heidi are two. Yet Lola seems to think she can quarrel with Max putting Magda, the one taking all the risks, in an impossible position and nobody even bothers to discipline her at least, not in a way that sounds like she really means it when Deidi weakly tells her sister to try diplomacy. The performance was really good though. As for the rest, I didn’t even finish it. A meaty morsel that turned out to be rancid is how I’d sum up this book.

impact of The War in Germany on Germans
This novel is about wartime experience of several germans during WW2. i thought it would focus more on the story of the girls in the attic. Rather the focus was wartime events and suffering. i found the author to be extremely repetitive with the events, the descriptions, and circumstances.

Hard to Believem
Girls In the Attic fell short of the other books I have listened to by this author. The characters were poorly developed, hard to believe. The dialog between the Decorated SS officer & the discovered Jews was so implausible- it read more like a sappy romance than a serious historical novel. I was disappointed in this book.

Excellent narrator. Excellent story. Different perspective for the storyline. It grabs your attention at the very beginning and never lets go. Lots of tears.
