Summary

The bestselling author of The Designer presents a sweeping story of blind faith, family allegiance and how love makes one man question everything he thought he knew.

Max Wolff is a committed soldier of the Reich. So when he is sent home wounded, only to discover that his mother is sheltering two young Jewish women in their home, he is outraged.

His mother’s act of mercy is a gross betrayal of everything Max stands for. He has dedicated his life to Nazism, fighting to atone for the shame of his anti-Hitler father’s imprisonment. It’s his duty to turn the sisters over to the Gestapo. But he hesitates, and the longer Max fails to do his duty, the harder it becomes.

When Allied bombers fill the skies of Germany, Max is forced to abandon all dogma and face the brutality of war in order to defend precious lives. But what will it cost him?

Captivating story

There were lots of twists and turns to this story. Although it was fiction it could easily be true. It made me realise that whatever country you are in there are always so many casualties of war.

Take a step into a dark period of history.

this book was bought on a whim, I wasn't sure I'd enjoy it but I haven't been able to stop listening, the characters, the storyline, the backdrop of a horrendous war with enough authenticity that it felt so real... it's a book I think everyone should read/listen too.

Wow, just wow

In the UK we are taught about the Blitz that occurred around our country, but very little is spoken about the bombing of German and the numbers of innocent people killed there. Perhaps this book should be read by older school children to help them understand how different German people reacted in the closing year of the 2nd World War.

A superb book

Beautifully written and read. Poignant, sad, historically so informative. I thought I knew this chapter of history but found enormous gaps that this book filled whilst giving a story that was so needed to be told.

A very difficult listen

A very sad and difficult listen but very interesting. Lots of historical information and much terror share, not for the faint hearted.

Absolutely brilliant

This had me hooked from start to finish. I’ve read a lot of ww2 novels but I think this is the first I’ve read which delves into wartime Germany from a non-Jewish German’s perspective, as in the case of Magda and Max… a beautiful but tragic tale, with Jewish Lola’s heart wrenchingly sad story told beautifully, and which was narrated masterfully. I don’t think I’ve ever really realised the dreadful effect of the Dresden bombings and the final months of battle on ‘normal Germans’. Highly recommend this book
