A magnificent performance

Was hooked from start to finish with this production of the hound! Strong performance from all of the actors, I really enjoyed this performance, thanks so much.

An All Hallows Eve twist on a classic.

A relatively faithful moody retelling of this classic tale. There is a slightly superfluous thread of additional mysticism, but it's not quite enough to upset a purist. Good performances and an evocative soundtrack make it the perfect accompaniment to a winter evening by candlelight.

Could have been a perfect dramatising of a classic

I have no idea why the character of old mother Gree was added, she served no purpose that I could see, in fact I grew to resent every time she appeared. Other than that it was a really enjoyable series.

good adaptation

A good atmospheric interpretation of a familiar story. Not one for purists but I enjoyed it.

interesting version

I am not opposed to adaptions of classics this one is very well done. extra characters and different twists makes it for a damn good programme. Thoroughly enjoyed it. If you want the original this ain't for you. But I really enjoyed it.

Marvellous dramatisation.

My first dramatised Audible book. Excellently portrayed by all the cast (already a fan of Stephen Fry) and I highly recommend this.

Excellent!

Very immersive and addictive to listen to!
The acting and incidental music create ample drama and excitement.
This well known tale is breathed into of life once more through this exciting production.
I recommend this production to Sherlock fans and those unfamiliar with the tales alike.

A bit muddled and Fry is all wrong

I'm not a Holmes aficionado. I only know this story from the Benedict Cumberbatch TV version, so I can't say how faithful this is to the original, although judging by what I've read here, it doesn't stick too closely at all.

What I can say is that this all feels a bit muddled. Meera Syal's Mrs Greep (?) adds nothing to the story apart from an extra, unnecessary layer. And the casting doesn't help. The two young male voices sounded too similar to me. The young actress suddenly switched to a vague Eastern European accent, so it was quite a surprise when they mentioned her Spanish heritage.

But the biggest problem for me was the casting of Stephen Fry. There are 2 aspects to the problem. First, no matter what character he plays, he plays it the same way. So his Watson here is the same as anything else you've heard him do. But apart from that, even if, by some miracle, you're not familiar with his work, he's simply too old. Watson is a man of about 30, and Fry is in his mid-60s. So he just sounds all wrong, and it gives Watson a different dimension that simply shouldn't be there -- that of an older, seemingly slightly dim companion.

The other actors play their parts well, and the sound design is good but... The whole thing just fell a bit short for me.
