Summary

Lord Tristram Radcliffe has a secret - he is the only dragon at the king’s court in Llangard. It’s a secret he’s kept from the knights he’s fought beside, from the ladies who bat their lashes at him, and from his closest companion, Prince Reynold. If it were to get out, he’d be banished to the Mawrcraig Mountains along with the rest of his kind, but the kingdom of men is the only one he’s ever known, and his heart lives in the stone halls of those who’d count him an enemy.

When the old king dies and Prince Reynold takes the throne, two visitors from the north throw Tristram into the middle of the ancient conflict between dragons and men. They put him on a collision course with the king’s shadow, Bet Kyston, a dangerous assassin who may want him dead or may want more of Tristram that he’d ever thought to give.

With the eyes of dragons upon him and a threat from the north creeping toward the home he loves, Tristram must weigh his allegiances before his dual legacies tear him apart.

Good fantasy story, interesting (good) narration!

I enjoyed the world-building and the characters. There's a lot going on in the story - court politics, secrets, loyalties - all told from all the major players POV. This may seem a bit confusing when reading, but when listening, the different POVs made a lot of sense.
The romance is not the main focus of the story, but it's there.
This is my first M/F duet narration - great fan of Greg Boudreaux, he gives a great perfomance. Lessa Lamb is new to me andd she gave just as good a perfomance. Both made this a great way to enjoy the story! 🤗

A captivating book.

Fawkes and Burns are engaging writers in this story. I found myself sucked into this world and enjoyed the story and engaging characters. Boudreaux and Lamb’s performances were enjoyable and brought these characters to life. I cannot wait for the next one.

Intriguing and full of complexities

This book has it all.
Amazing world building, political intrigue, magical beings, mystery and suspense, divided loyalties and betrayals.
All told from multiple viewpoints that are so brilliantly interwoven you can tell where one ends and another begins.
The narrators have done a bang up job of bringing this vivid and vibrant tale to life..

The Kings Dragon 🐉

I love books about dragons, magic and times of old and this story has it In spades!
What a great start to what appears to be a compelling series, which had me listening to this audiobook book in one sitting.
It took a little while getting into as it has 7, yes 7 POV! So until you get used to the characters names it helped me to look at the chapters as they are named.
The plot is interesting, the world building intricate and the characters well rounded.
The attraction between Bet and Tris is evident but the relationship is more complex and I’m looking forward to seeing it develop further in the next book.
I really liked the way this book had some positive strong female characters as well, which are main characters in their own right.
I definitely will be looking forward to the second book in the series.
Both narrators did an excellent job narrating.

Truly Loved

When ever I listen to an audio book one of the things that are important to me is the way in which the narrator brings the author's story to love and in this particular case the narrator hit it out of the park.

The voice given given to the characters had me bewitched from the second very second I started listening to the very end.

Captivating

The beginning is quite confusing, as there are so many characters and every chapter, we follow another character then in the previous. However, when you've figured out who is who, the story gets extremely interesting!

Enjoyable listen

Unlike some listeners, I found the multiple points of view easy enough to track (there were chapters for different characters like with Game of Thrones). I think it depends on how much of a picture you build of each character, so down to listener style I guess. This was a good book. If it was a bit longer I think I would have felt a deeper connection with each character. Fortunately I’ve already listened to the next book which is longer and it is a great addition, and I’m eagerly awaiting the last book now.

Fascinating!

I discovered Sam Burns books in a giveaway a few months ago and since that moment I’d been reading a few of her books and I got caught in her wonderful writing style. Now this book, with the combined talents of her and WM Fawkes, is an exciting fairytale full of action and danger, a lot of intrigue and a fascinating romance (Not spoiler but WOW!). The complex plot with some pretty interesting twists and turns kept me at the end of my seat the whole time. In addition, hearing the story read by 2 voices, male and female according with the character's point of view was unique, Mr Boudreaux and Ms Lamb made an amazing job. WOW!

Great Fantasy Tale

I was given a copy of this audiobook by Gay Romance Reviews in exchange for an honest review.

The premise is great. There's intelligent plotting and intrigue, alliances and relationships, etc, amid fantastic world building. The character building is a little shallow, but I'm sure that will be developed in future books in the series where the authors can focus more on that than setting the scene. Those elements give The King's Dragon more of a high fantasy with LGBTQ+ characters feel rather than a gay romance, though. There's absolutely nothing wrong with that...it's very good story telling, just some readers/listeners might need to adjust their expectation for what kind of adventure they're embarking on.

As for the performance, this was always going to be tricky given the story is told from so many POV. It was definitely ambitious to try ro pull it off with only two voice performers. For the most part it works, though. My issue is one of personal taste. Lessa Lamb's voice/performance is just too sugary sweet for me. The constant featheriness (is that even a word?) just didn't work for me and really grated on my nerves at times. I've enjoyed Greg Boudreaux's performance for other authors and he does a decent job here too, but overall I'll definitely choose to read the next book rather than listen to it.

Story: 4.5*
Performance: 3* (mostly for Greg Boudreaux)
