The first great war of Ovira is over, and the most hated king in centuries is dead, but his nephew still lives. However, Basen had nothing to do with the destructive war his uncle started. In fact it was his uncle who exiled him and his father to the territory of their enemies, where Basen's dreams of becoming a legendary mage now fade, as he must work all day just to eat. Story
Centuries ago, the murder of a beloved king tore apart the Kingdom of Caledun. The land was plunged into chaos and thousands perished. A new order was established in an attempt to return Caledun to its former glory. It failed, but in its place rose the beginnings of the Code. During this same period, the mystical caretakers of the Great Wood retreated from the world of Kal Maran, their disappearance an ominous harbinger of the suffering that was to follow. The Great Wood now grows out of control. Cities, towns, and villages have fallen before the relentless march of the forest.

The ancient magic of wizards was anything but dark. It was the enlightenment that lifted humanity from the squalor of superstition, and the worship of fell spirits and capricious gods, but those days are gone. The shining glory of the sorcerers burned away the subtlety of wisdom, replacing it with easy power, held only in the hands of the elite - a new age built upon the elemental supremacy of aristocrats and the ignorance of the masses.

Minalan gave up a promising career as a professional warmage to live the quiet life of a village spellmonger in the remote mountain valley of Boval. It was a peaceful, beautiful little fief, far from the dangerous feudal petty squabbles of the Five Duchies, on the world of Callidore. There were cows. Lots of cows. And cheese. For six months things went well: He found a quaint little shop, he befriended the local lord, the village folk loved him, he found a sharp young apprentice to help out, and, best yet, he met a comely young widow with the prettiest eyes.

Summary
On the anniversary of his father’s passing, Jon leaves home in search of answers. The land is full of mystery and intrigue, and Jon wants to explore it all with the dream of one day becoming a sorcerer. But when Jon receives an invite to the castle for training, he starts to believe there has to be a catch.
A long time ago, Jon’s father was once a guard near the capital city. Now Jon finds himself back where his father used to work, and he’s beginning to learn why his father had wanted to raise him away from here. He will discover that, along with certain threats to the kingdom, there are also many magical arts to learn. Some seem stronger than others, but all have their use. Jon must come to understand the complexities of sorcery as he uncovers the mysteries and threats to the kingdom. But he also must learn to deal with the other sorcerers who have come to train at the castle at the same time as him...some of whom are hard to trust.

Very entertaining
Many of the best magic systems are those that keep it simple, coupled with broadness of field and gradual revelation. The King's Sorcerer does this all, with the system being completely unique and interesting and letting the protagonist's characteristic strengths shine. The plot, too, is rather simple. A kingdom or city under siege isn't anything new, and yet the excellent story telling, world building and realistic characters sets it apart as a very worth-while and entertaining book. There is an incredible balance achieved between the perceptions that we are hearing the story of John, the story of the kingdom, the story of the king, and the conclusion of... well, that'd be a bit too close to a spoiler, I think.
I never used to pay too much attention to narrators aside from trying to filter out bothersome quirks so that they don't ruin the story, but Simon Vance is fantastic. I will look twice at any potential purchase in future, if he is narrating it.

Really enjoyable
I was glued to this book from start to finish, taking every opportunity I could to listen or read the kindle version. The magic system seems really interesting. I would have liked the book to be longer however and spend some more time building the characters. The events seemed to all happen a bit too quickly without building up properly first.

Nothing new here
Story line only mediocre and main character intensely annoying . It just didn't sit right that a young apprentice sourcerer would be practically on first name term with the King. Also the main character seems to be the only one who can have all the good ideas and of course he's really good at everything - urgh

It's okay for adults
I feel had I listened to this series before my previous series I would of enjoyed it more. Unfortunately I felt both series were very samey but the other was just better overall. I feel this book would be enjoyable for teenagers and is quite a safe bet as it isn't graphically violent and isn't sexual more around the sweet innocence of romance.

Beautiful writing
This particular epic fantasy has everything, great world building with a subtle magic system. For a quick read it is beautifully written with a relatable hero who has several quote worthy passages. Still unsure
I listened to the entire book. It ended strange.
So short the whole 3 books could have been made into one.
And quite youth based? At times it seemed it was meant to appeal to a younger crowd, but then at other times it seemed to address adult things.
I did not care for the “hero”. So full of himself, the beat at everything he does it seems.
Sorry I wasted a credit on it.
I kept waiting for it to get better

good book, great performance.
I thoroughly enjoyed this book. It is the first I have read from this author, and I will definitely explore more of his work. my only real criticism would be that there are a few occasions that it seemed to lack a real threat to the MC. Not to say it wasn't there at all, but it always worked out for him, even when it was built up to possibly be horrible and no where comes close. one of those feel good story where the MC is the strongest, smartest, and never fails... which isn't a bad thing. I am one of the few who regularly enjoy this kind of story, as long as it makes sense. It was really only the ending that bothered me, as it was built up to being worst case, but then the punishment is a joke. otherwise, I loved it, and I cant wait for book 2.

interesting concept poorly written though
cool idea but alot of issues with the story. Mc was way to strong way to fast making it pointless to read. nothing happens in the background really and all the. characters are bland. the climax of the story is anti climactic. fights where poorly explained and there was no description of any scenery(building forests catsles rooms ect.) what's so ever. had good potential just needs alot of work
