Summary

One day, your son disappears from the playground.

Ten years later, will you finally get the truth?

The disappearance of firearms police officer Jonah Colley's young son almost destroyed him. A phone call from an old friend leads Jonah to the warehouse Slaughter Quay, and the discovery of four bodies, with a link to his son's case. Attacked and left for dead in the dark, Jonah is the only survivor.

Under suspicion himself for what happened at Slaughter Quay, Jonah uncovers a network of secrets and lies about the people closest to him—forcing him to question what really happened to his son all those years ago...

Suspension of Belief required periodically

I love Simon Beckett’s David Hunter books and expected this book to be as good. Well it was and it wasn’t. My husband and I listened to The Lost in the car and we both asked one another, “so how did Jonah fit into Gavin’s schemes?” Unless either of us is profoundly stupid it was not at clear. That was disappointing. We also thought the ending was abrupt and added nothing to the narrative of the story. What happened to Owen Stokes. How was it that he conveniently appeared in the photos Fletcher had acquired? A shame really.

Gripping

I never write reviews, until now. Loved this booked, not full of cliches and usual procedurals, the weather, the girl with red hair, etc. Not forgetting Paul Thornley one of the best narrators, so often I’ve returned just because of bad narration. Sit down, and really enjoy this book

Great narration. Gripping story, plenty of twists. Excellent

This book was exceptionally well narrated. The sour characterisation of DI Fletcher was simply great.
Great story, plenty of twists and turns and unbelievably gripping - couldn’t put it down.
Best book I have read in a while.

an unbelievable hero..

The hero frustrated me greatly, the story was rather unbelievable, the language unnecessarily foul - i would not read any other future books in this series.

Brilliant author & narrator

This is the 1st book ive listened to by this author and it definitely wont be the last. This is a brilliant, well written book that kept me up all night.

Paul Thornley is one of my favourite narrators (along with Angus King). I usually find new listens by searching these narrators, which is how I found this book. Paul makes a brilliant book even better!

Tense and credible read

Good story, well told and despite a few small procedural inaccuracies kept me listening right the way through. Loved the portrayal of the DI investigating the main character and a lovely twist at the end which I genuinely had not seen coming. I shall be following this author!

Not quite 5 stars

Well..I listened to the very end and it was certainly entertaining from an author I hadn’t heard of before. I selected it because of the narrator who as ever was excellent and it turned out to be a good choice.

My only slight disappointment was that the amount of gratuitous violence the hero suffered during the story just wasn’t feasible, he would have been in Intensive Care for months. Hence the four stars…still, as ever with Paul Thornley it was narrated in a gripping manner and won’t disappoint.
