About this listen

The Lost Boy spent over two years on the New York Times best-seller list and has profoundly influenced more than one million readers' lives.

Following the tremendous success of Pulitzer Prize nominee A Child Called "It", this book continues the extraordinary tale of author Dave Pelzer's childhood. On the verge of adolescence, Dave is rescued from his terrifyingly abusive, alcoholic mother and made a permanent ward of the court. Then the real journey begins. He is moved from one foster home to another, searching for identity and family. A rebellious, defiant boy, Dave seeks attention by shoplifting and even spends time in juvenile detention when suspected of arson. Finally, after five sets of foster parents, he finds a mother and father who love him.

Pelzer, who has received commendations from Presidents Reagan, Bush, and Clinton, travels throughout the world inspiring others through speeches and work to prevent child abuse. His courageous story is enhanced by Brian Keeler's thoughtful narration.

David

Brilliant follow up to ‘a boy called it’. Brilliant to see him come through such a difficult childhood and the challenges he faced growing up without his parents (if you could call them parents), They were evil to the core

Emotional....VERY Emotional!

After "A Child called It" I just had to see how this poor boy tackled through his life.
I felt I wanted to be with him every step of the way!
courageous and honest is an understatement!
incredibly raw and deep thought provoking!
be prepared to feel many emotions that will stick with you long after the last page.

story of oerserverance

I loved the repeated ups and downs of recovery from abusive childhood. The clear torn psyche of one who wants love but also wants to escape hatred.

touching story

I read a child called it a while back and remembered how poignant but well written it was. so of course I had to hear more and journey with David. I'm grateful he chose to tell his story, it's a very important perspective to have such insight into. its raw real and believable. with that said I feel the narrator lacks in vulnerability in some areas where its needed to be communicated more

Eye opening. Humbling. Courageous.

David Peltzer tells his story with such courage. I’m aware of course of the world of fostering but it’s not a world I have any experience of. David’s story fills me with awe and admiration for children who come through this, and for adults who become foster parents. This is a story of triumph against all odds, and leaves me feeling truly humbled

The lost boy

Hard to listen at some parts. Such a compelling story. I have worked in the world of social care for a number of years and this is just so reflective, such an incredible insight into how children who have been abused feel not only during their abuse but the aftermath and recovery they go through. The book is so well written and read, makes you feel like you’re the one experiencing the same things. Thank you David Pelzer.
