Summary

Brought to you by Penguin.

English crime novelist Charles Latimer is travelling in Istanbul when he makes the acquaintance of Turkish police inspector Colonel Haki. It is from him that he first hears of the mysterious Dimitrios - an infamous master criminal, long wanted by the law, whose body has just been fished out of the Bosphorus.

Fascinated by the story, Latimer decides to retrace Dimitrios' steps across Europe to gather material for a new book. But, as he gradually discovers more about his subject's shadowy history, fascination tips over into obsession. And, in entering Dimitrios' criminal underworld, Latimer realises that his own life may be on the line.

Great book

This is a read of a book I read when I was a teenager. My uncle belonged to a book club and he had new books arrive monthly. So when he finished reading they were passed on to me. I really enjoyed the book then and have enjoyed the read even more now. I think that may be because I am in my seventies and it makes more sense to me.

Brilliant classic

Well read, a story with cool characters, nicely told. Enjoyed it so much I’m on the lookout for another Eric Ambler story…

Disappointing

This was my first Eric Ambler novel and I expected to enjoy it far more than I did. I thought it was boring and long winded, I couldn't get interested in any of the characters and the plot just wandered on and on without apparently getting anywhere until near the end. I did finish but I don't really know why I bothered. The narrator didn't help - he had a habit of taking a sharp and very audible intake of breath after almost every phrase. This was very distracting because I kept watching and listening out for it. I've listened to a lot of Audible books but I haven't had this problem before.

Great reading of the classic 1930s novel.

A concise and beautifully crafted story set just before the Second World War. The characters, plot and atmosphere of the time really come to life and this is helped by an excellent narrator. Highly recommended!

Hugely disappointing

I had loved other novels by Ambler and like is style very much but I found this novel hugely disappointing as it has an incredibly dull plot.

Classic spy novel in sub-standard audio production

Good enough spy story…not as good as Le Carré in my view. Reader is OK without being that great..and voices if different characters hit that distinct. Worst of all, however, is that within the production … at fairly regular intervals - there is superfluous talking which is very audible and distracting. Whether it is a conversation in a room next to the recording studio….and has been accidentally recorded I don’t know, but it really tarnishes an audiobook which wasn’t that good in the first place.
