Summary
Marathons are no longer impressive.
Pain is to be relished, not avoided.
Hallucinations are perfectly normal.
Ultra running defies conventional logic. Yet this most brutal and challenging sport is now one of the fastest growing in the world. But is it an antidote to modern life or a symptom of a modern illness?
Adharanand Finn travelled to the heart of the sport to find out - and to see if could become an ultra runner himself. His journey took him from the deserts of Oman to the snow-capped peaks of the Rockies, and from a 24-hour track race in Tooting to his ultimate goal, the 105-mile Ultra-Trail du Mont-Blanc.
The Rise of the Ultra Runners is the electrifying, inspirational account of what he learned along the way. Through encounters with the sport's many colourful characters and his experiences of its soaring highs and crushing lows, Finn offers an unforgettable insight into what can be found at the boundaries of human endeavour.

Excellent writer; horrendous reader..
The story and the lessons within are well worth it. The price alas is paid not only by purchasing the book, but by having to listen for hours to the authors dreamy, monotonous, droning voice.
Every time he droned in about “something” “sumfink” and nothing” as “nuffink” I could have stabbed myself in the eye.
Don’t give up the day job chap. Stick with writing.

Annoying narrator voice
Yes, I know the author is also the narrator but his accent is seriously annoying.
He does these weird stresses on the last letter of certain words followed by a strange pause and it really grates. The topic he's writing about is interesting enough so my coping strategy is to increase the speed to 1.5 which helps a lot.

Brilliant!
Loved this. I listened to this while running and often my mind drifts, but I was gripped by this. It’s not just for ultra runners. Perfect for anyone interested in endurance sports. So well researched, with lots of interesting facts and stories.

Very good!
It start out a little slow and I didn’t think I’d get to the end (that may be just me). But suddenly I found it really interesting & entertaining. A well written book and read well, unlike many an ultra running book!

Fantastic Finn gets to the heart of ultra running
A gripping story from the very start giving a firsthand insight into the world of ultra running.
Finn manages to weave the story of his own ultra running journey to the utmb, with interviews of elite ultra runners as well as taking on issues surrounding doping and ethics in sport. A must read/listen for me!

Lively and informative survey of Ultra running
Great mix of a personal adventure into the sport at same time as mapping out the main races, personalities and also some deeper questions on issues in the sport and possible future direction. The author comes across really well as open to new expierences, brave and respectful to the sport, the traditions and the mountains themselves. Looked fwd to hearing each new chapter. Great writing.

Inspirational
The story from start to finish is inspiring, knowing that even the fittest people go through struggles us normal people do. To feel like you're almost there and despite the woes faced makes for an interesting listen.
Mr Finn delivers again.
