About this listen

Guy Fawkes Night, 1857. Joel Heygate is the popular stationmaster at Exeter St David's railway station - an impressive figure of a man replete with frock coat and top hat, bushy eyebrows and walrus moustache. But when the charred remains of a body are discovered in the embers of the town's annual Bonfire Night celebration, everyone is horrified when it becomes clear that they belong to Mr Heygate.

Mr Gervase Quinnell of the South Devon Railway contacts Scotland Yard for their assistance, and Superintendant Edward Tallis sends the Railway Detective Inspector Robert Colbeck and his assistant Victor Leeming to Exeter with all due haste. They quickly unearth three suspects, but are they missing something?

It is only when Heygate's diary turns up unexpectedly that the truth becomes clear and a fourth suspect emerges. As Colbeck closes in on the killer, he finds himself in mortal danger - can justice prevail?

Great story

Enjoyable listen with good narration. Well plotted and a clever ending with clues along the way but not too predictable. Character of the key detective well drawn.

Another Good One

Another good book and one again great narration from Cornelius Garrett who is a great improvement on previous narrators. however it seems the next couple of boojs are missing and then it's yet another change of narrator, hopefully he will be as good (or better than Cornelius ) its a shame they cant just stick to one good narratorfor the whole series..

Narrtor voices changes to established charactors

I am saying farewell to the Railway Detective here. I enjoyed it but this in this last book the author seems to have forgotten things he had one of his characters say during a few discussions in all previous books, a total 180 turn. Ok will not affect the story which is plot-wise as great as ever and the attention to historical detail but between the change of narrator for this and previous books, who has changed how characters speak, I just cannot go forward with this as a series. I had bought the next book but have returned it for credit without listening to it. Maybe in time when the series is not so fresh - I listened to books 1-9 back to back - I will listen to the rest but not now. I want to remember the Railway Detective I met in Book 1.

I tend to buy the first book in a series and if I like it buy all the others together, only didn't buy all this series with so many being missing in the middle. Most I know will not do this so the change of what a character has said in the past and the change of narrator might not be as big an upset as to me.

Great Story, narration can be a bit strange

Story was great however the Narrator seems to have decided to re-engineer the Chief inspector as a Brummie.

I’m addicted to this series

I thoroughly enjoy listening to this series. Although I did miss the old narrator as I’d got used to him voicing the various characters.

A riveting story with a delightful end.

The Railway Detective never disappoints. The most ingenious and very satisfying unravelling of a delightful story brilliantly told.
