Surprised by a great story in an unlikely setting
What made the experience of listening to The Sun at Midnight the most enjoyable?
Characters I wanted to travel with. I'm not a great lover of tales of extreme adventure but this was about the human drama and the challenges of the Antarctic were knitted into the narrative. Couldn't stop listening.
What was one of the most memorable moments of The Sun at Midnight?
The birth of little Meg
Have you listened to any of Rula Lenska’s other performances? How does this one compare?
She tackles a range of voices well, but the masculine ones seemed a bit more of a challenge for her in this book.
If you made a film of this book, what would be the tag line be?
Love in a cold climate!!!
Any additional comments?
Rosie Thomas has taken me from the heat of Kashmir via Egypt to the ice of the Antarctic. Her local knowledge shows real professionalism, but never outshines the skill of a master storyteller.

Painfully bad accents
I really enjoyed the story but the accents, and the voices, were truly bad. Particularly the character of Rooker.

Rosie Thomas is my new favourite author
Rosie Thomas is a great story teller and writes beautifully too - more 'lit' than 'chick'! This is the second of her books I have read and it was a real page turner. A great mixture of adventure story and love story. I was so sad when it came to an end.
The narrator was generally good, although some of the voices she used - especially for men - were not very believable.

Brilliant escapism
I had not read this author before but can't wait to read another,In a way its a love story but its mostly a story of how a clever but cautious woman finds that she is more resourceful and strong witted than she could have believed.Because it is is set in the Antartic there is a great feeling of suspense and you feel that you are there with her trying to come to terms with living in close quarters with strangers.IThe narration is great and she does a good job of differiniating the characters.I did not want to do anything else but listen and am brokenhearted that I have had to leave Alice...

Bland
Having just finished a sensational trilogy, this feels comparatively bland. The writing is highly descriptive, almost as if the writer is trying to win a school prize for best descriptive writing. I find the characters have little depth, there’s a distinct lack of feeling or intensity in the relationships between the characters. The plot is captivating enough to keep you listening, though it’s pretty slow-going. The narrator with her smoky voice reads well, especially with all the adjectives and metaphors she needs to enliven.

Just wanted it to end
I’ve listened to better Rosie Thomas books. Whilst the location descriptions are fascinating and so interesting the characters are a right annoying bunch. Alice is selfish and her decisions dangerous to herself and her companions. It was a bit like a soap opera and I found myself which disaster the next twist in the storyline would be. I got to the end but I’m still feeling irritated by the whole thing.
A shame because it’s such an unusual and interesting setting.
