Summary

A dead girl lies on a blood-soaked mattress, her limbs spread in a parody of ecstasy. The scene matches a series of murders which ended with the conviction of Derek Tyler. But Tyler's been locked up in a mental institution for two years, barely speaking a word. Criminal psychologist Dr Tony Hill thinks this is not a copycat murder but something much stranger. Hill heads towards a terrifying face-off with one of the most perverse killers he has ever encountered….

Ruined by narrator

What made the experience of listening to The Torment of Others the most enjoyable?

The plots and story lines are great Val McDermid is an amazing author but the narrator really spoils it!! his geordie accent is atrocious and more welsh

Gripping

Much improved narration

Gripping plot that accelerated as the tale unfolded.

Strong characters even with some average regional accents.

Brutal, but thrilling installment

As always, Val McDermid gives a masterclass in how to thrill, shock and scare. A brilliant story made even more compelling by top notch narration.

Brilliant crime novel

As usual Val McDermid does not disappoint. I really enjoy the tricky relationship and deep bond between Tony and Carol. Also the other characters are well thought out and the story flow is excellent. I couldn’t put it down especially towards the end and I was quite surprised with the killers identity so overall, very impressed.

Disappointed.

I re-played this book recently as I had forgotten it. It came back to me that I was still disappointed in the delivery and the story line in this book although I usually enjoy listening the authors work and the narrators voice.

Awesome series

I love Val McDermid, especially the Tony Hill / Carol Jordan series.
Many of the reviews I’ve seen complain about the narrator, he is a ropey in the first book but gets better - and you’ll be so engrossed in the story you won’t care.

A bit predictable at the end

I do very much enjoy Val McDermid's books, h but find that the Tony Hill & Carol Jordan stories are somewhat formulaic which sadly makes the endings rather predictable.

While Saul Reichlin gives a good performance as narrator, I do occasionally get irritated by the way he voices female characters - Carol Jordan in particular - and the attempt at a Geordie accent in this novel was jarringly awful.

Neither of these things will stop me from avidly listening to the rest of the TH & CJ series of stories though.
