About this listen

From multi-million copy seller, K. L. Slater comes another breath-taking thriller, narrated by Claudia Jessie (star of Bridgerton & Line of Duty)

All she has to do is pretend to be his girlfriend…

Alicia has left her young son and sister to chase a better life in London. But she’s not just chasing opportunity, she’s running from the truth.

At the Orbit, an elite enclave towering above the city where the great and the good come to play, Alicia waits tables, watching everything.

When the charismatic owner of The Orbit offers her a deal - pretend to be her girlfriend in return for a salary and an apartment - Alicia accepts. After all, it’s only pretend … until it’s not.

Soon, Alicia is living the life she’s always dreamed of — but behind the flawless façade, something is deeply wrong and some deals cannot be broken. As her past begins to creep towards her, Alicia thought she was the only one playing a game.

It turns out she wasn’t alone…

Narrator was good.

Story was somewhat flat for what I would expect from the author.

Story was a little flat and basic

Not K L Slater's best, but OK. It kept me listening to the end anyway.
Fairly standard domestic thriller with a woman in the lead part and in peril for herself and for her family.
Set mainly around a new London sky scraper called The Orbit.
Some underhand goings on as the dodgy owner competes with equally dodgy rival to win the bid for a similar construction in Manchester.

Domestic Thriller - OK

I was extremely lucky to get this book for free, but have had the pleasure of a few of this authors books and have not been disappointed. This was a great book and really enjoyed it thank you 🤩

I was a bit disappointed with this book. Having enjoyed K L Slater books previously, I expected better. I expected there to be elements of mystery, edge of your seat suspense but there was none of that. Glad it was free!

Where was the mystery?

It was OK. An easy listen. The characters were a bit two-dimensional. Some convenient deaths to resolve plot issues. Some clichés and a generous amount of stereotypes. But ... it was free. I would be irritated if I'd paid for it.
Narration was clear and well-paced, but no explanation as to why the two sisters had such wildly different accents...
Would I choose this author again? Based on this and the one other book of theirs that I've read (Message Deleted) probably not.

Not the best, not the worst
