Summary

A detailed account of one of the strangest and most shocking episodes in American history, written by the author of "The Lottery".

Stories of magic, superstition, and witchcraft were strictly forbidden in the little town of Salem Village. But a group of young girls ignored those rules, spellbound by the tales told by a woman named Tituba. When questioned about their activities, the terrified girls set off a whirlwind of controversy as they accused townsperson after townsperson of being witches. Author Shirley Jackson examines in careful detail this horrifying true story of accusations, trials, and executions that shook a community to its foundations.

A chilling, fascinating non-fictionalised account.

This book is perfect for anyone wishing to know a bit more about the infamous Salem witch trials, namely: how horrific the ordeal actually was, the extremes that those people got to, and the repressive, hypocritical society they lived in. For the most part, the author draws from extant trial records and correspondence, and lets the picture of mass hysteria speak for itself. Very well narrated, too.

Perfect Halloween read

Shirley Jackson is one of my favorite authors, this book is the perfect example on how she could write about almost anything and make it witty and interesting.

Fascinating

A really fascinating account of the Salem Witch Trials. Gives a great overview of what happened and possible interpretations without pushing you in one direction or the other. Great to read during Halloween week.

Absolutely Abhorrent on Audible - really annoying.

Didn't finish. the narration was unbearably annoying. The silly voices during the court trials were not needed. Although historically accurate, it just grated on me. It's awful on audible but probably mildly better if read as an actual book rather than listened to.

Bizarre

That’s one of the craziest things I’ve ever listened to. And the narrator’s creepy voice suited the subject perfectly. Chilling.

Shocking tale

An incredible and awful story, narrated beautifully. Shirley Jackson really brings to life the the personalities and relentless madness of the Salem witch trials, and I was transfixed by the calm and gentle telling of it in this audio book.

Very Informative

Really enjoyed this book. Very informative and provided a good insite into the Salem witch trials. The end concluded with information relating to the effects of the trial on the town and the people left behind. Very enjoyable.

A good listen for all ages

Although it’s apparently intended for younger readers, I nevertheless found this a very well told and engaging listen.
