Summary

Tina Chen just wants a degree and a job, so her parents never have to worry about making rent again. She has no time for Blake Reynolds, the sexy billionaire who stands to inherit Cyclone Systems. But when he makes an offhand comment about what it means to be poor, she loses her cool and tells him he couldn't last a month living her life.

To her shock, Blake offers her a trade. She'll get his income, his house, his car. In exchange, he'll work her hours and send money home to her family. No expectations; no future obligations.

But before long, they're trading not just lives, but secrets, kisses, and heated nights together. No expectations might break Tina's heart...but Blake's secrets could ruin her life.

Refreshing!

I know that's a weird headline but it's how I felt about this book.

It was refreshing to have an Asian leading lady.
It was refreshing to have her be strong without being a bitch.
It was refreshing to see a couple evolve where neither of them is a "white knight" (all puns intended!)
It was refreshing to see the vulnerable side of the male lead without emasculating him.
It was refreshing to see how naive he is, compared to her street smarts, and neither of them were caricatures.
It was refreshing to have such realistic dialogue that wasn't a diatribe, and finally,
It was refreshing to see such a wonderful unique bond between father and son.

Yes he's rich and she's poor but you'd be surprised how that didn't play out in the usual "I will save you" trope. Courtney Milan, I love your books! The historical stuff and this new series set in modern times too. So beautiful to see a romance novel be full of diverse characters in an inclusive rather than tokenistic manner. The story isn't a stereotype and the romance is still very real.

The leading lady doesn't make nonsensical assumptions to advance the story. Her self-worth is not dependant on a man. Her leading man does not assume he knows what's best for her, and he's not so strong that nothing can phase him. They're both blessedly human with brains and they behave how you'd expect highly intelligent humans to behave - sensibly most of the time and slightly irrational when emotions take over - like most of us. And I think that's the thing. You're not sitting here going "what the hell are you doing?" or rolling your eyes at anyone's stupidity.

This is romance for people who want love with a hefty serving of common sense.
Yes, common sense is absolutely sexy!
