Summary

John Milton hasn't seen Elijah Warriner for three years. The last time they met, Milton's efforts to keep the boy safe didn't go exactly to plan. Now Elijah is a promising boxer, preparing for the bout that will take him to the big time. Milton decides that he will spend the week before Christmas in London so that he can watch the fight.

But Elijah's burgeoning fame has brought him to the attention of old acquaintances with long memories and grudges to bear. They have noticed Elijah, too, and decide that now is the time to settle old scores.

Can Milton keep the young man and his mother safe, or will Elijah's old running mates get to him first?

Superb..

A shorter instalment to the brilliant John Milton series, but just as good as any of its predecessors.
On this occasion, Milton returns to old ground, visiting his friend Elijah, whom he'd helped way back in the early stages of the series. Elijah has gone on to big things, but is now getting noticed by those that Milton had protected him from before. The usual fast paced action you'd expect from Mark Dawson, and great to see the trio of Milton, Hicks and Ziggy back in flow.
David Thorpe does a wonderful job of narrating.
Can't wait for the next one!

Not so good

I have listened to all the John Milton books. I now know more about boxing than I ever wanted to know. Very short book not the usual length, but it does sort of sum up John's story, whether that is the end or not I guess the author will decide. Don't let that put you off the others in the series, they are great. I've just been waiting for this one for a while and was a little disappointed.

Hmm..

I’m halfway through chapter 23, I have over 4 hours to go, but I’m not enjoying this story. So I quit.

Gang life, as depicted here, is not engrossing or engaging. I read the previous story in this timeline and enjoyed it well enough, but perhaps I’ve grown out of this particular aspect of the genre.

Whatever it is, I’ve heard enough.

Perfect but short

Yet another fantastic story. It's a bit short only being under 6 hours but it's brilliant as always.

Please don't make us wait that long for the next one

disappointing.

after the disappointment of the last Milton book l initially thought this was him back on form. slightly surprised that he had picked up an old story to take further. but it started with good Acton. but (what felt like) half way through the story, everyone gets killed and the story suddenly ends. after only 5 hours narration. As usually the performance was brilliant but the story disappointing.

Not to usual standard

I have read and enjoyed all the Milton books but this one was a disappointment. Very slow build up to a below average story which follows on from a previous tale.
Hopefully the next story will make up for it.
David Thorpe excellent as usual.

Only 5 hours this book?

I love all the John Milton books but this one was a bit of a rip off.

A bit of a shorter installment in the series,

But the character development alone compared to the first one made this one very enjoyable. Absolutely thrilling from start to finish!

Gets better and better

I thoroughly enjoyed this book, and I am so glad Milton went back to book one. I worry that he has underestimated Miss T, however. Why does he think it is safe to walk away from her? I worry for his back! As always, the plot moves along and what happens, unlike in so many similar, but not as good novels, all feels sensible, like it could have happened just like that. Dawson just gets better and better, his writing improving like a good red wine. Not that he would ever read this, but I would like to say thank you to him! A first class story.

Probably the best voice actor ever

Really gripping story revisiting a previous plot. As ever Mark Dawson kept up a good pace and David Thorpe characterisation was simply brilliant. First class series
