Summary

In Under the Skin, Anstey explains why these ten individuals are so important, highlighting how their mammoth contributions still resonate in the post-COVID era. And, ultimately, how these 10 forebearers helped to create an institution that defines Britain to this day. This insider's story of the realities of frontline NHS clinical services during 10 years of underfunding takes the listener on a fast-moving and emotional journey of discovery, from despondency to hope, toward a better understanding of the NHS, and emphasizes the need to nurture and support those who dedicate lives to this great institution.

An objective analysis of what the NHS needs now

Prof Anstey takes us on a quest to discover what might be possible in today’s NHS, applying evidence based and patient-centred approaches.

His scope is wide-reaching, encompassing rare diseases, common diseases, health service improvement, clinical research, teaching, and meaningful patient involvement.

What makes his book compelling is how things unfold from dual reference points - development of his own career as an academic doctor, plus the historical perspective of several healthcare heroes, some are household names, whilst others deserve to be so.

Prof. Anstey’s book should be read by anyone interested in healthcare improvement, lay and professional alike.
