Summary

Ready Player One meets Halo

Imprisoned for a murder he didn't commit, Kaiden's only hope of early release is in serving as a Warden in the game world of Nova Online.

Playing as a unique class while surrounded by aliens, pirates and warring guilds, he and his squad are tasked with protecting new players and enforcing the rule of law.

But Kaiden has other ideas; he is intent on proving his innocence. The keys to his freedom lie hidden in the game's seedy underbelly. And as he'll soon discover, the bloody trail that led to his arrest is more twisted than he could have ever imagined.

I feel like some trauma was needed.

Seen some of the reviews saying the online part was pretty good but the irl parts was very meh. I will have to agree with them. I gotta say, the murder mystery plot was very weak. Mainly because of how little we're told about his arrest, accusations, trials and subsequent life in prison. His naivety in the real parts didn't fit the character of a falsely accused person in an apparently public trial for his only friend's murder. For whatever reason, he still had the gall to be surprised when it's revealed the government is corrupt. That's all it took for him to follow Zelda. Some distrust, fear, rage or outright nihilism would've fit his backstory more than in this book.

I guess I'm also annoyed by his lack of personal ideal/thoughts on the powers that be, just some naive, good vs bad, black & white reasoning. This standing in contrast to his detail oriented behaviour in the game.

In terms of rebels vs the party, it would've been better if the Captain had better arguments to challenge the rebels ideals and convince Kyden. At least try to steelman the characters' arguments, it would've made it more compelling. But I guess the author tried to balance things out with the final scenes instead. But it ends up just highlighting Kyden's naivety too much by that point.

good story

really enjoyed this book. It had a good story arc, slightly predictable but didn't affect the overall enjoyment. Was not as detailed as other litrpg which sounds like a criticism but it isn't, focuses more on what's happening than going through minute details like leveling stats and item stats.
