Summary

The Alchemist meets The Three Musketeers - with card tricks. A brilliant origin story of adventure, wit and philosophy to enrapture devotees as well as newcomers to the Spellslinger series.

Ferius Parfax has a simple plan: kill every last inhabitant of the spell-gifted nation that destroyed her people, starting with the man who murdered her parents. Killing mages is a difficult and dangerous business, of course, but when she meets the inimitable and extraordinary Durrall Brown she discovers that physical strength is not the only way to defeat evil of all kinds.

So Ferius undertakes to study the ways of the Argosi: the loosely knit tribe of tricksters known for getting the better of even the most powerful of spellcasters. But the Argosi have a price for their teachings, and by the time Ferius learns what it is, it may be too late.

Perfect for fans of The Dark Tower, Firefly, Guardians of the Galaxy, Terry Pratchett, Ben Aaronovitch and Jim Butcher.

“Fear, like love, makes a fool of wisdom”

Wow!
I feel like this book is much darker than the Kellen books and is even more absorbing cause of it; there’s so much more pain and despair and doesn’t have the added levity of the Kellen novels to ease the tension. I don’t know how Sebastien does it; he claims he wrote these books after the realisation he wasn’t “special” in the way of fantasy novels, but I’m pretty sure he’s using some sort of silk magic on the readers. There’s a line in the epilogue that almost ripped my heart out…!
Ok, so after listening to Joe narrate all 6 of the other books, I was a little disappointed to spot a change of narrator, but very quickly I realised it was definitely the right choice for these Argosi books. Kristen is amazing! She pulls you into the story with great atmosphere and character voices and she has a whisper that is filled with such power and emotion it’s like nothing I’ve come across before.
I honestly think this is my favourite book in the series now (I think it’s best listened to after completing the Kellen storyline) and can’t wait to jump straight into the next one.

Excellent

I have to admit when i realised this book wasn’t to be narrated by Joe Jameson i feared the worst. Joe is great with female voices and his Ferius Parfax in the Spellslinger series was for me perfect.
In general i don’t get along with female narrators doing fantasy, they just don’t click with me. However having said that i thought Kristin Atherton did a great job, she managed to give each character their own voice and her delivery was smooth and flawless. I loved the story partly because i love that world but also because it was interesting and gripping and of course gave me more information about one of my favourite characters in fantasy. Cant wait for the follow up book..

Brilliant - well worth the time to listen

Can’t fault the story line and the narration - although not by the narrator of the Spellslinger series - was fantastic. Really enjoyed the backstory of one of the characters in the Spellslinger books and I really enjoyed the story and can’t wait for the next instalment. That said, I’m missing squirrels cats!

The serious side of Ferius Parfax.

I loved Ferius Parfax in the Spellslinger series so was keen to listen to her story. I found This book hard going and I did not enjoy the first twenty odd chapters. It did pick up in the final half of the book and again I'm interested in the second book.

if you are a fan of the Spellslinger series then this different its not as light hearted, and it seriously misses a squirrel cat.

narration was spotless.

Great addition to the Spellslinger series

I really love the Spellslinger series, so I thought to try this book. I am so glad I did! The story of Ferius Parfax is a bit dark, compelling and also, funny sometimes, especially after she meets her mentor, Durral Brown, the Path of the Rumbling Thistle. So if you like the series, I think you'll enjoy Ferius 's story and how she became an Argosi, and true to de Castell 's writing methods, the last quarter of the book is the most exciting part. As for the performance, again, I really enjoyed listening to the narrator who brought all the characters alive brilliantly.
