Summary

'When was the last time you stopped and noticed a wild plant?'

An intriguing and timely exploration of the importance of Britain and Ireland's plant life.

Leif Bersweden has always been fascinated by wild plants. From a young age, his afternoons were spent hunting for and cataloguing the plants in his local area. But it is a landscape that is fast disappearing.

Climate change, habitat destruction and declining pollinator populations mean that the future for plant life looks bleaker than ever before. Many of us are also unable to identify, or even notice, the plants that grow around us.

Now a botanist, Leif decides to go on a mission, to explore the plants that Britain and Ireland have to offer and to meet those who spend time searching for them. Over the course of a year, Leif goes on a journey around the UK and Ireland, highlighting the unique plants that grow there, their history and the threats that face them. His journey takes him from the Cornish coast to the pine forests of Scotland—even to the streets of London, proving that nature can be found in the most unexpected places. Along the way, Leif highlights the joy and positivity that can be found through understanding nature and why it is so desperately important to protect our wildflowers.

Fantastic listen!

The enthusiasm and knowledge of Leif is amazing. I was a little worried having this as an audiobook, as I thought I would need to see the pictures of the flowers to enjoy it, but that was not the case. highly recommended!

Beautiful wildflower journey

This was a great listen. Although I'm a gardener, I have limited knowledge of wildflowers. This was a transporting introduction to wildflowers and their habitats, but also a trip to wider landscapes and seasons. The book runs across the year as well as the country, and the author's lovely, gentle narration carries you with him on his plant adventures. I learnt so much. You can look all the plants up on the website.

Joyous!

Having followed Leif for several years on Social Media I well knew his infectious enthusiasm for flowers. But this book is so much more!

I own the hardback book but confess to struggling to find the time to dedicate to sitting and reading it as thoroughly as it deserved so chose to buy the audiobook and I am so pleased that I did.

His enthusiasm is infections but never feels like he is showing off what is a huge wealth of knowledge, just joyful sharing. As a result I learnt so much.

The accompanying website is brilliant in its simplicity. Do go and look it up, each and every flower mentioned in the book is shown.

I know that this is a book that I will listen to again, perhaps dipping into chapters rather than listening in one go again as the chapters very much stand up to listening in isolation which is a huge positive in my view.

Well Written and Engaging.

I enjoyed this book. It was well written and researched, easy to focus on (I have a tendency towards getting distracted), and written about a very interesting topic. Personally I'd have liked a little more detail about the specific plants and environments he covers, but I think the level of detail he goes into keeps the book easy to get into and follow, without the risk of people who may be newer to the topics getting bored, or being put off by needing any previous knowledge.

I also enjoyed the narration, I really like hearing books in the author's own voice.

Makes you feel like you’re walking through nature yourself

The narration is brilliant, Leif has one of those voices that relaxes you and is so easy to listen to. I’ve been struggling with mental health and so decided to go on walks around the countryside of Northern Ireland, which is unfortunately quite barren and farmed where I live. This book makes me feel like I’m walking through a lush landscape with how well he describes the scenery of his travels, and I’ve managed to find gorse, daisies, bluebells and snowdrops!

I’ve also noticed a wide range of “weeds” that I never took notice of before, and he had me smiling the whole way through by describing his encounters and funny stories while being a botanist in the wild.

Brilliant

Thoroughly enjoyable. My mum was a celebrated flower arranger but it’s been a long time for me to become interested in plants. This has been a wonderful introduction and I’m looking forward to spending more time outdoors learning about them.
