Summary

Can a boy possibly save the animals and lead them all to the promised land? A thrilling of adventure involving a stolen ark, a motley crew of animals and a crashed Spitfire, from award-winning author, Phil Earle.

September 1939. Britain is on the brink of war.

As Noah Price’s dad marches off to fight, he asks his son to honour one vital promise: that he will keep their dog, Winn, safe. No matter what. Noah agrees, but his best intentions are crushed when the government advises people to have their pets put to sleep as part of the war preparations. Children are heartbroken; queues outside vets’ surgeries stretch for miles. But Noah is a resourceful and impetuous child. He won’t just do what he is told. Far from it. With his two friends in tow, he makes a pledge—to go on the run and save as many animals as he can, whatever the cost.

Critic reviews

"A truly brilliant story of courage and resilience and exceptional animals. This wartime ‘Incredible journey’ (only far, far better) is definitely Phil Earle’s best yet." (Emma Carroll, author of Letters from the Lighthouse)

"The special bonds between children and animals are explored in a fresh way in this compelling wartime adventure, and Earle gives equal weight to harsh realities and deep compassion. Another stunning read from one of the most authentic storytellers writing for children today." (Lesley Parr, author of The Valley of Lost Secrets)

"A page-turning triumph to make you laugh and cry—it’s Phil Earle at his best." (Jacqueline Wilson, award-winning author of The Story of Tracy Beaker and Hetty Feather)

Great story but irritating narration

I wish authors would stick to what they do best and leave actors to do what they do best. I spent the first few chapters trying to work out why children were being evacuated from Yorkshire and then it just annoyed me that everyone from the east end of London had a northern accent. It detracted from the otherwise fantastic story.

Just brilliant

This was a stunning listen for children and adults. Heartbreaking at times but a fabulous story which should become a classic.

Another excellent creation from Earle

I downloaded this immediately after reading When the Sky Falls. There were so many times when I wanted to pause the story to Tweet of the most recent instalment, however, I was torn between doing so and listening on..I just had to listen further.

A great write and performance from Mr Earle.
