Summary
"It’s always a pleasure to watch a keen mind absorbed in a difficult puzzle, which is how Dave Gurney distinguishes himself in John Verdon’s tricky whodunits." (The New York Times)
"Verdon’s novels, now read in twenty languages, feature serpentine plots, heightening suspense, skillfully developed characters, and a rich sense of place." (Booklist, starred review)
Tensions have been running high in White River as it approaches the anniversary of a fatal shooting of a black motorist by a local police officer. The economically depressed, racially polarized city is on edge, confronted with angry demonstrations, arson, and looting. In the midst of the turmoil, a White River police officer is shot dead by an unknown sniper. As the town spirals out of control, local authorities approach Dave Gurney to conduct an independent investigation of the shooting.
The situation in White River becomes truly explosive as more killings occur in what appears to be an escalating sequence of retaliations. But when Gurney questions the true nature of all this bloodshed, and zeroes in on peculiar aspects of the individual murders, his involvement is suddenly terminated. Obsessed with evidence that doesn't support the official version of events, Gurney cannot let go of the case. Despite intense opposition from the police, as well as from dangerous fanatics lurking in the shadows, he begins to uncover an astonishing structure of deception - learning that nothing in White River it what it seems to be.
White River Burning is the most provocative and timely book yet by the author hailed by The New York Times as "masterly."

I wish choosing my next book was as easy as this every time
I’m not one for writing a review, I listen easier than I offer an opinion, and I have listened to many many books. Having read (by ear) so many books I’m starting to struggle to find my next read (I started and failed to finish my last two). THIS IS NOT ONE OF THOSE. As soon as I pressed play i found it difficult to stop. It’s not your normal cop/murderer read where you can guess the likely finale. Having listened to the previous titles (which you must do chronologically) I can really see in my mind every regular character, particularly Jack....no spoilers. This is an author that is as addictive as nicotine.... only not as harmful!

Best yet
John Verdon gets better with each book. The humour gets dryer and the observations of human nature more insightful. Can’t wait for Audible to finally get round to releasing “ On Harrow Hill” as an audiobook.

Excellently written thriller
I have enjoyed the previous books in this series and would recommend them. This one I found a bit more challenging. Not because of the plot or the writing but because of the smooth voiced narrator. He is so smooth I found it hard not to drift off and lose concentration!

Hard to get any better in any category
What you get is a great story and a great performance by the narrator. Sometimes you get to the end of a book and it fizzles out and ends with an anticlimax. This book is different because it is so good that it is still with me hours after completing it. I am going to listen to it again with my wife to share certain light bulb moment things that he has said throughout the book. I like Michael Connelly and David Baldacci a lot and now John Verdon has overtaken them by a mile!

The most satisfying Gurney novel
I put off listening to this due to the negative comments about the narrator i.e. it's not Jeff Harding, leaving some distance was a good idea.
I am a huge Jeff Harding fan however I think Christoper Lane is a better 'voice' for Gurney . Gurney is a cerebral character It's all about what's going on in his mind he's not a slam, bam, thank you Mam.
The story has all the usual unbelievable complexities but then it wouldn't be interesting or intriguing without them. It's a really good Gurney book, give it a go.

Perseverance is key
Don't normally review things but wanted to so I could remind myself about this later!
I have listened to all six David Gurney books over the last few months, the change in narrator for the latter two was an adjustment but not an unwelcome one
my issue with this story was mainly that I struggled to stay interested through big parts of it - sure the payoff was good, but I just couldn't engage as well as I have in his other ones. I'll definitely listen to the next one if it's ever released on audiobook, but on the merits of the whole series, not based on this one alone

Another heart-pounding page turner
John Verdon has fast become one of my favourite authors, irrespective of genre. His thrillers are, as the name suggest, absolutely thrilling. White River Burning is a great addition to his list of brilliant Dave Gurney thrillers. Christopher Lane had a very hard act to follow in Jeff Harding. While initially not happy with the change, l must admit that Mr Lane is now equally good at delivering the Gurney novels, and has grown into the grit of the acerbic characters of John Verdon's novels. They read, and are read, like modern day noir novels of the Golden Age authors of the 40s.

Don't be put off!
I've read a fair few bad reviews (especially the last book) which all seem to all stem from the change in narration which I will admit is not as good as Jeff (who is???) but I certainly wouldn't be put off by the new narrator, definitely does a decent if not good job and the actual story is a good one.
