Summary

Winner of Best Narration by the Author at the Audie Awards 2020.

Finalist in Best Young Adult Audiobook at the Audie Awards 2020.

Ever since she got pregnant, 17-year-old Emoni's life has been about making the tough decisions - doing what has to be done for her young daughter and her grandmother. Keeping her head down at school, trying not to get caught up with new boy Malachi. The one place she can let everything go is in the kitchen, where she has magical hands - whipping up extraordinary food beloved by everyone.

Emoni wants to be a chef more than anything, but she knows it's pointless to pursue the impossible. There are rules she has to play by. And yet, once she starts cooking, and gets that fire on high, she sees that her drive to feed will feed her soul and dreams too. And anything is possible.

A sumptuous novel, food for the soul and the heart, perfect for fans of Angie Thomas' On the Come Up, Nicola Yoon and Justin Reynolds' Opposite of Always.

Gentle and beautiful narrative

This was just what I needed. A gentle story, beautifully written and a lovely voice to listen to.

BEST AUDIOBOOK EVER

I loved how Acevedo presents Emoni as strong willed, talented, and able to do whatever she puts her mind to, without shying away from the realities of young motherhood and the conversations surrounding that. The chapters are all really short which helps you zoom through it with the same satisfaction as a Netflix binge. The characters are so well written, Malachi and Abuela have my heart, and the focus on friendship is beautiful. The use of cooking as the central focus was so unique and exciting, and the interspersing of recipes (all with Emoni’s signature touch) was so cool, but be warned it will make you hungry! I listened to the audio & I really recommend as it’s the best audio I’ve ever listened to. I’m just so sad it’s over.

Good bit a bot long

This book was a bit long and the cooking part reminded me of Like water for Chocolate, even if the stories are completely different.
We follow Emoni, a teen mom that was brought up by her grandma and struggles to reconcile the limitations she has in life with achieving her dreams. She has a natural talent when it comes to food and appears to infuse her recipes with some magic when she cooks. It’s slow bit a nice story.

An easy, soulful read that I found so engaging.

I adore the way this was written, it felt incredibly personal but at the same time keeps you at arms length right until the end. I hate writing reviews that talk about the story because that is something I think you should experience for yourself but I got through this in a matter of days because I simply couldn't put it down.

Beautifully read by the author and was just the kind of wholesome I needed. There are some elements of realness and history that remind the reader of the undertones of the story that were superb in adding to, not only the grace of the story but the reality of the world we live in.

Definitely going to be reading more of Elizabeth Acevedos work.

Good Read

This story is really good, not a typical story great ending the only thing I would say the use of the word babygirl is a bit much but after a few hours you get used to it

Magical realism, food and Latin American love

I absolutely love magical realism combined with a love for food. At first I hesitated buying this book because I'm tired of stories set in high school, but I'm SO glad I gave it a chance. As a Latin American, a lot of this book really resonated with me. And I loved Imani as a protagonist, the way she navigates life, learning about her perspective and struggles and dreams, her love for her daughter. All the people surrounding her are interesting, fleshed out characters. Awesome narration too! 10/10

Beautiful

This had been on my shelf a while but the audiobook finally came up next to listen to and I enjoyed it so much. The narration was perfect and perfectly captured Emoni’s voice. I was hungry half the time listening to this and had the urge to cook even though I am nowhere close to a chef.

Fabulous

Wonderfully told story of a girl growing up to becoming a young woman. She might have been a mother from the start but Emoni really blossomed.

A delicious novel

This is not my usual go-to novel but I loved every word. Narrated by the author she brings her story to life in such a way that pulls you into the story. It was engaging and open and addressed subjects and topics that are very relevant today. Well worth a listen. I listened to the entire book in one sitting. Studying throughout the night while I listened to this book. I loved it so much I'm going to buy the physical book as well. It has inspired and enticed me to look at other things from this author. I'm not going to give you a synopsis of the story for fear it would give too many spoilers, plus you have the blurb and a sample to entire you.
