• Radical Acceptance: Yourself, your reality, your past, your addiction

    Ep #307: You know how you look around and get a bit upset at yourself for the life you have created, the situation you are in, or how you behave? The problem you circle back to again and again and again and again is that you are not happy about certain aspects of your life, and you think that if you beat yourself up enough times, you will FINALLY get it right and start doing the right thing or something else that will change it all. Like you can move all the pieces around over and over and eventually you will get a better picture. We know what it is like when something pops inside of us, and no matter what, we are determined to make it better or right or something different than what it is now. Hell, we did this with our addictions. Enough is enough is enough is enough, and come hell or high water, we are swimming through this deluge until we find solid ground.

    When you radically accept your life, your behaviors, yourself, YOUR REALITY - it is in that moment of acceptance the clarity you seek finds you. Imagine if the only thing stopping you from creating the life you have always desired was simply accepting yourself for who you were, are, and will be and, from that seat of empowerment, making the wise-minded decision to take a step. That step, in whatever direction you choose, is one that truly begins when you accept yourself in the now. That, my friends, is freedom.

  • Action: Are you dreaming about the life you want or working toward it?

    Ep #306: Life is full of choices. You choose what to do. You choose how to react. You choose how to respond. You choose what to do with your time. Sobriety does not promise anything other than an opportunity to better your life without the weight of a hangover, daily addictive behaviors, and the constant rationalizing of your actions as being okay even though you know they are not okay. You can say, "I can't," all you want, and that is still not going to change the fact that bills are due, people are relying on you, and your life is literally happening right before your very eyes - every single second of the day. You make choices, you make decisions, and you either take action or you stand still and deliberate - and while there is an optimal time for reflection and deliberation, at some point, you must take a step, you must take action.

    Often, any action is better than no action because, without action, you do not get an outcome that gives you a hint at whether you are going in a desirable direction or not. You choose. Every day, you choose what your life will be and become, and no one can take these actions for you. Nobody can lift the weights, eat healthier, or do the work for you, and you get the rewards. The life you desire will come off the metaphorical and often very real sweat off your brow.

    Choose wisely - it's only your life we're talking about here.

  • Our experience of time and how it affects our addiction recovery

    Ep #304: Wasted time or a wasted life? We can often start sobriety with much animosity toward the world and what it did to us that led us down this path of active addiction. As personal responsibility begins to take hold of you, you'll find that you start to accept responsibility for your actions. As that unfolds, you may then get angry with yourself for all the time you wasted being wasted. This energy can destroy your early enthusiasm toward your sobriety as the thoughts that you should have started this sooner or the feelings that you are just never going to figure it out root into your psyche.

    None of this is truly true. Relapse is not inevitable. Failure is a mindset. Deciding that time spent then is not how you chose to spend time now and that you can not fast forward 7, 14, 28, 56, or 112 days (and beyond) into the future is a part of realizing that each day is your chance to make choices that lead you to where you want your sobriety and recovery to take you.

  • One day at a time AND I will never use again

    Ep #303: Recovery is about balancing the long-term goal of "I'll never use again" with the daily focus of "one day at a time." Focusing on what can be controlled today is crucial, as sobriety is a personal choice only you can make. Every day presents an opportunity to take responsibility for that choice, and that's where real change happens - today. But we want to have our eyes on the future and how our decisions and actions today will guide us in creating the life we desire for ourselves tomorrow.

    Sobriety promises nothing. Well, maybe it promises less blackouts and knowing what you did last night before you went to sleep, but it does not outright promise you a better life. That is for you to create. We can achieve this through our daily actions toward our long-term desires and goals.

    Thus, one day at a time, and I will never use it again, are not at odds with one another - they are working together, in unison, to aid in our achievements of long-term recovery and a much better experience of our lives.

  • Early sobriety, longterm recovery, and 300 episodes

    Ep #300: Seven years of sobriety and 300 episodes later, I've learned some powerful lessons, and the first one is that it's all about progress, not perfection. We don't need to be perfect; it's the progression we seek, and to manifest progress, we must keep showing up.

    Mindset is everything—how you think determines how you live. Shifting from a fixed to a growth mindset changed everything for me, and it can be for you, too.

    Emotional resilience? It's your superpower. Life throws challenges, but learning to bounce back without turning to old habits is critical. And speaking of habits—self-talk can make or break you. How you talk to yourself either pushes you forward or pulls you back. Reprogram your mind to be your biggest cheerleader, not your harshest critic.

    Connection is the opposite of addiction. We can't do this alone. Building meaningful relationships is a game-changer. And when setbacks happen—and they will—they're just setups for comebacks. Every stumble is a chance to grow stronger. Sobriety is only the beginning. The real work starts once the substances are gone—it's about building a bigger, more fulfilling, and always-evolving life.
