The play is set in a small town, located on the banks of the Volga. Romantic beauty Larisa Ogudalova, daughter of an impoverished widow noblewoman and, of course, dowry, is madly in love with Sergei Sergeyevich Paratov, owner and elegant gentleman, unprincipled and calculating man who is ready for his own whim to gamble not only his, but also someone else's life.
