The Sign of Four is the second story by Conan Doyle about the exploits of Sherlock Holmes. From the moment Mary Morstan tells Holmes about the mysterious disappearance of her father and the yearly gift of a pearl from an unknown benefactor, Holmes and his companion Watson are involved in an exotic tale of stolen treasure, secret oaths and murder, culminating in a breath-taking chase down the Thames. The Sign of Four (SIGN) is a Sherlock Holmes novel written by Arthur Conan Doyle first published in the Lippincott's Magazine in February 1890. This is the 2nd Sherlock Holmes story. In the 7 and 14 June 1890 issues of The Bristol Observer appeared the first illustrations of Sherlock Holmes wearing a deerstalker, before the well-known Sidney Paget ones.

The New Adventures of Sherlock Holmes was a radio show which aired in the USA from 1939-1950, most famously starring Basil Rathbone as Sherlock and Nigel Bruce as Dr. Watson. Episodes from 1939 through 1943 were written or adapted by Edith Meiser from the books of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. From 1943 onward, most shows were written or adapted by the team of Dennis Green and Anthony Boucher or Green and Leslie Charteris who replaced Meiser who left the show over her disagreements with a sponsor over the amount of violence in the program.
