Yakima Henry has been dealt more than his share of trouble, even for a half-white, half-Indian man in the West. Now he's running a small Arizona horse ranch with his longtime love, Faith, and he thinks he may have finally found his share of peace and prosperity. But Bill Thornton still has the wound from where Faith - once his most valuable working girl - shot him before Yakima carried her off. And he has a heart full of hatred. 1942 - Granbury, Texas. A 95-year-old man walks into a recruiting office with the crazy idea to enlist - and an even crazier story. He claims to be the one and only Jesse James, the infamous bank robber allegedly shot by Robert Ford 60 years earlier. Using another man’s corpse to collect the reward, Ford allowed James to slip away and start a new life. Turns out he has a natural talent for turning salt pork and dried beans into culinary gold. He’s as good with a pot and pan as he is with a gun — which comes in handy on a dangerous trail drive beset with rustlers, hostile Indians, ornery weather, and deadly stampedes. Mac can hold his own with any cowboy twice his age. At least until the real showdown begins....

Story
The Nueces Strip in southwest Texas of 1875, harbored Mexican border raiders, Texan vigilantes, a mixed population of cattle ranchers and hard scrabble farmers, all fighting the land, the weather and each other. Into the cauldron descend 40 Texas Rangers, under the leadership of Captain Leander McNelly, with orders to stop the raids, quell the fighting and bring peace to the strip. Based on historical events, the tale takes us into the lives of Rangers, raiders, ranchers and farmers as they endure the hardships of this violent chapter in Texas history.
