Summary
La novela nos presenta a un monje español, llamado Ambrosio, un religioso profundamente virtuoso que es tentado por el demonio bajo la apariencia de la doncella Matilde.
Pactos demoníacos, violaciones, incesto, castillos en ruinas y la Inquisición española, inundan la novela de acción y aventura. Ambrosio es un hipócrita frustrado por la lujuria y su conducta sexual impropia dentro de las paredes de conventos y monasterios. Es un indigno sacerdote retratado a través del filtro de la desconfianza inglesa en el catolicismo.
El autor, Lewis era un anticatólico imbuido por la rivalidad entre potencias, sobre todo entre España y la Gran Bretaña.
