About this listen

Los Angeles, 1943: Reporter Nathan Doyle had his reasons to want Phil Arlen dead, but when he sees the man's body pulled from the La Brea tar pit, he knows he'll be the prime suspect. He also knows that his life won't stand up to intense police scrutiny, so he sets out to crack the case himself.

Lieutenant Matthew Spain's official inquiries soon lead him to believe that Nathan knows more than he's saying. But that's not the only reason Matt takes notice of the handsome journalist. Matt's been drawn to men before, but he must hide his true feelings - or risk his entire career.

As Nathan digs deeper, it becomes increasingly difficult to stay one step ahead of Matt Spain - and to deny his intense attraction to him. Nathan's secrets may not include murder, but has his hunt put him right in the path of the real killer?

This novella contains scenes of gay erotic content.

Okay

The cover for this audiobook threw me at the first instance because it looks like a contemporary book, what with a modern looking man and a skyscraper cityscape. I had no idea it was set in the forties, wartime America until 4 chapters in.
The story dragged and then suddenly Matthew was in insta-love? Entertaining but not the best Lanyon story.

Great mystery, great romance

I love this historical m/m romance by Josh Lanyon. Set in 1940s Los Angeles it's centered around the murder of a society ner-do-well and the ensuing romance between a police detective and a reporter. I treated myself to this audio edition for Christmas. The narrator hits the character's voices bang on for me and I will definitely be listening again.

In the middle of death we are in life

Atmospheric tale of desperation, of longing, of passion, and of the lengths those hungry enough will go to to get what they need, even at gun point.

In true JL form, we have MCs you can like, doing their best in shop-soiled lives to get by, after their horror-show war experiences, and where the loved ones they fought to protect died at home of illness. The piquant connection they feel is what drives them to make their tragic decisions, grasping to each other for one last taste of peace. Happy New Year to them. Great narration.

ENJOYABLE DARK TALE
