The female experience in Sour Hall

Lydia, Audible's commissioning editor for scripted content highlights how identity is explored in this recently released podcast: One of the many things I love about Sour Hall is the breadth and intersectionality of the female experience that it’s able to explore. Ash’s experience at Sour Hall in particular is informed by issues of queerness, Blackness, and fertility.

But what I really love is that while it explores these areas of womanhood that are often presented in terms of their challenges, the series also finds so much joy directly related to these identities. It turns the tropes we usually see for these groups and themes upside down in Laura Kirwan Ashman’s signature hopepunk style, which when applied to Horror is truly subversive.

Based on a short story written by Naomi Booth for Hag, a collection of forgotten folk lore, retold as feminist fables Sour Hall follows George and Ash, an interracial lesbian couple who move to an isolated farm high up on the Yorkshire moors. In this bleak setting the couple are tormented by a boggart determined to exacerbate the sources of their pain and gorge on their energy.
