在原業平と並び称された恋多き歌人・平貞文の歌でつむぐ歌物語

平安時代の貴族・平貞文（通称平中）を主人公とした歌物語。
三十九段からなり、すぐれた恋の歌とその背景となる事情や人間関係が丁寧に語られる。
平中は貴族の中でもやや低い地位にあったが、歌詠みとしての才能がすさまじく、『古今和歌集』にも作品が選ばれ、紀貫之ら当時一流の歌人たちとともに活躍した。
ここに描かれる平中の日常は、必ずしも華やかで楽しいことばかりではなく、うまくいかない恋や仕事へのなげきも多い。等身大の男の物語は、各時代の人々に共感されてきたのである。
