17歳で美濃の国大垣藩恩田持ちの貧乏徒士である和地伝四朗に嫁いだ伊緒。しかし、結婚してたった30日ほどで伝四朗は、「おれが討死したら、離別して実家へもどってほしい」という言葉を残して、暴徒を鎮めるため肥後の国天草に出陣する。伊緒は年老いた姑と病気がちな義弟の郁之助のために、必死で家を守り続ける。しかし、やっと凱旋してきた人々の中に伝四朗の姿は無かった。死傷者の記名にも伝四朗の名は無く、死体も遺品も見つからなかった。ついには戦場から逃げ出したらしいという評判まで広がるのであった……。
夫の汚名を返上するため働き続ける伊緒の気高く美しい姿をお聴きください。
