徳川家康と、城下から突如姿を消した元家臣、佐橋甚五郎との因縁を描いたもの。
家督を譲って駿府に引退していた家康のもとを、朝鮮からの使節団が拝謁に来った。家康は翠色の装束をしてうやうやしく使節の一行を迎えたが、面前に控えた三人の特使のうちに一人、顔を見知っていたものがあった。かつて自分の家来だった佐橋甚五郎である。使節団が退出すると、家康は俄かに警戒の色を見せた。
「興津弥五右衛門の遺書」や「阿部一族」に続く作品、前二作においては、「殉死」を巡って男の意地や体面を追及し今回は意地そのものを取り上げている。森鴎外はこの3作品を「意地」と題して出版した。

1862年（文久2年）島根県に生まれる。森家は津和野藩の典医を務めた。10歳の時、父と上京し、官立医学校に入るためにドイツ語を学ぶ。1873年、東京大学医学部に12歳で入学。卒業後は陸軍軍医副になり、東京陸軍病院に勤務し、ドイツの衛生制度を調べるためにドイツに留学。1889年「小説論」、翻訳戯曲を発表するなど軍医でありながら文筆活動をしていた。「陸軍省医務局長まで務めたが、1916年に退官。その後、東京国立博物館に就任。1922年に60歳で死去。
