＜内容紹介＞
ある公園のベンチ。目の前の噴水の音を聞きながら、「私」は夕刊を広げていた。ある記事を探し、見当たらないことが分かると安堵した。
「私」が探している記事は一ヶ月前にある空屋で絞め殺された下町娘の死体に関する報道。実は、その事件に「私」が関わっていた。
夕方のこと、会いに来た恋仲になっていたある娘の桃割れと振袖姿が美しすぎたため離れ家に連れ込んだ。そして、いきなり一思いに絞め殺したのだ。
それから「私」は扱きを解いて部屋の鴨居に引っ掛けて縊死を遂げたように装わせた。それから毎日朝と晩に二度ずつ、この公園に来ては二三枚の長官や夕刊に目を通すのが日課となった。
ある時、いつものように新聞に目を通して冷笑を含みながらマッチを擦ろうとした際にある見出しに目がいった。この記事では、廃屋から会社員らしい若い背広男の怪死体が見つかったと書かれている。
「私」はすぐに公園を飛び出し、娘の死体を吊るしておいた空家に向かった。真っ暗の部屋の中マッチを擦って見ると、そこには「私」の死体があったのだ。

日本の小説家、SF作家、探偵小説家、幻想文学作家。
1889年（明治22年）1月4日 - 1936年（昭和11年）3月11日。
他の筆名に海若藍平、香倶土三鳥など。現在では、夢久、夢Qなどと呼ばれることもある。福岡県福岡市出身。日本探偵小説三大奇書の一つに数えられる畢生の奇書『ドグラ・マグラ』をはじめ、怪奇色と幻想性の色濃い作風で名高い。またホラー的な作品もある。
