湖南の鵠沼を舞台とした、静かな情景描写の中に不安が滲み出す短編小説。
「僕」は友人達と一緒に蜃気楼を見に行くため、鵠沼に向かっていた。
ようやく海岸に着いたが、期待していたものを見ることはできず、ただ陽炎が揺らめいているだけ。
どこか憂鬱な空気のなか浜辺を歩いていると、水葬した遺体についていたと思しき木札を見つけた。
空は晴れ渡っている。しかし「僕」には、却ってそれが不気味に感じられるのであった。
芥川龍之介（あくたがわ・りゅうのすけ）
大正期の小説家。1892年東京都生まれ。東大卒。乳児期から母方の実家で育てられた。
東京帝国大学在学中の1916年に第四次「新思潮」創刊号に発表した「鼻」が夏目漱石に絶賛され
文壇にデビューする。初期の古典を材料にした「羅生門」「芋粥」「地獄変」などの名作を経て、「点鬼簿」「歯車」など自己の周辺にテーマを得た作品に移行。
様々なトラブルで心身とも衰弱し、1927年に自殺して36歳の若さでこの世を去る。
没後、親友である菊池寛によって、芥川賞が創設された。
