四谷塩町のはずれで小さな道場を営んでいる鈴木伝内には、主水という倅がいた。伝内は、主水が何を考えているか大体のことは察しがつく。そのため、いつになく取り繕ったような笑顔を見て「いよいよ今日だな」と思った。今夜開かれる月見宴の御前で思い切り乱暴しようと考えているのだろう。主水は、何か胸に秘めた思いがあるようで、立ち振る舞いやものの言い方も少しずつ変わってきていたのだった。
１９５１年、第２６回直木賞受賞作。

久生 十蘭

小説家・演出家。1902年、北海道函館市生まれ。本名、阿部正雄。函館の小学校を経て中学校を中退、編入学した東京の聖学院中学校も中退し、帰郷。ギターやマンドリンのアマチュア演奏家として活動する。1920年に函館新聞社に入社し記者となり、同紙に随筆、小説などを発表する傍ら、文芸グループに参加して詩や戯曲などを発表。20歳の時に函館のアマチュア演劇グループ「素劇会」の結成に参加、主役や演出などを担当。1929年に渡仏し、国立工芸学校で2年レンズ光学を、技芸学校で2年演劇を学んだとされる。帰国後、新築地劇団の演出部に所属して舞台監督を務め、文学座の結成にも参加している。1939年に『キャラコさん』で第1回新青年読者賞を受賞、1952年には『鈴木主水』で第26回直木賞を受賞。多彩な作品を手掛け、「多面体作家」「小説の魔術師」と評される。
