「高瀬舟は京都の高瀬川を上下する小舟である」。 あるとき高瀬舟で護送の任を担った同心が、いつもとは違う雰囲気を持った罪人に興味を引かれます。その罪人の額は晴れやかで、目にはかすかな輝きがあったのです。生まれながらの極貧の生活を強いられながらも、欲心のない喜助。人助けの気持ちから弟の自害に手を貸してしまい、殺しの罪を負ってしまいます。この作品では人間の欲望ということと、現代でも大きな問題となっている安楽死の問題を取り上げています。 金田賢一の朗読は、同心と罪人のゆるやかなテンポで交わされる会話を、まるで船上に居合わせたが如く、味わい深く聴かせてくれます。
