伯父の娘、私の従妹にあたる富美子が黒手組に誘拐されたという。
私は急ぎ伯父の家へ向かい話を聞くと、黒手組からの身代金を支払ったのに富美子は帰ってこないらしい。
私は友人である明智の知恵を借りようと連絡を取ると、明智の方でも黒手組を調べているところであった。
明智は伯父から誘拐された日の富美子のこと、賊に身代金を渡した時のことなど、様々な話を聞き不思議なことに気付いた。
身代金受け渡しの時、賊の足跡がなかったというのだ。
他の者の足跡はあるのに賊の物だけが見当たらない。
そして富美子に届いていた暗号めいた手紙。
これらの謎を明智は見事解き明かすこととなるが、富美子は無事に帰ってくるのか？
