Summary
In July 1983, James Morgan Kane returned home in the evening to find a corpse in his living room. Fearing that he would be held responsible, and sensing that his wife was involved, he wanted to do all he could to protect his young family. Jamie worked through the night to dispose of the body. But his luck ran out days later, as he was arrested and sentenced to 13 years in prison.
Jamie entered the American prison system and was to stay there for 34 years with stints in San Quentin, Folsom State Prison and the notorious Deuel Vocational Institution in California. He would rub shoulders with some of the world's most infamous serial killers and gangs. This book tells of his time locked up with no hope of release, living the brutality of the tough and unforgiving American penitentiary system and finding his new purpose in life.

Interesting but lacked depth
The points raised in the story were interesting and insightful, and it’s clear Kane was subject to horrendous circumstances. However, it felt short for a 34 story and seemed only a handful of experiences were explored in depth. Too much time was spent on minor parts of his life/experiences, when it felt something far more interesting may have happened he could have disclosed. Either way, a good listen, but don’t expect any shock and horror moments.

welcome home!
what a story. what a life. Jamie is a living example of how biased, ineffectual and inhumane the US justice system can be (and the UK system, which is just as poor).
how can a man who saved a life (his wife), but served time to tick the box for the authorities , not be given clemency?
jamie, I hope your life is full of TT bikes , pub lunches and seaside town walks. I hope the UK treats you well and that you enjoy your years as a free man. God knows you deserve it.

What a screwed up system!
We can all make decisions without necessarily fully understanding the consequences or indeed the severity of those consequences but when family, friends and the system are all working against you, how the hell do you survive?
To say I enjoyed this audiobook seems bizarre given the mistreatment one individual experienced at the hands of the American court and prison system.
Whilst I have read many books that have given insights into prison life, this is the first one that focuses on driving change and positive outcomes even in the face of some horrendous challenges and experiences.
A system that worked against a man who didn’t deserve to spend his entire life in a prison for crimes he did not commit. Worse still is that the authorities knew he hadn’t committed the full crimes noted on his record!
I’m grateful to the author for sharing his experience and applaud his strength to manage his journey back to the UK. Welcome home!

Interesting and moving
This guy comes across as decent, so it’s hard to listen to how he was stitched up by pretty much everyone in his life. I actually shouted ‘no!’ at certain points in the narrative. I’m enjoying his directness and the no frills approach to story telling too. I sincerely hope things got better for him.

his honesty
A fascinating insight to American prisons. The frightening consequence of being in the wrong place at the wrong time. Of not being listened to and not being believed. Of the stoic ability to remain true to yourself and belief in your own self. This man's ability to remain positive in the face of adversity and to keep his eyes focused on just surviving and moving forward.
