About this listen
Brought to you by Penguin.
An evocative novel set in 1950s London from the author of That Green Eyed Girl.
West London, 1958. 73 Dove Street is a shabby house in a shabby street.
But this boarding house’s attic room suits newcomer Edie Budd very well.
It’s somewhere to hide.
Tommie, on the second floor, is up in Soho every night.
There’s a man she’s pursuing –
whether he wants her or not.
Landlady Phyllis has thrown out her cheating husband.
She’s burned his belongings in the street.
Sometimes there’s no going back.
Three survivors living under one roof.
Each alone nursing their secret hurts – and hopes.
Because opening your heart could save or destroy you . . .
'Gripping . . . Julie Owen Moylan vividly recreates drab, grey postwar London and her characters are convincing to the end' THE TIMES, 'BEST NEW HISTORICAL FICTION'
'Psychologically astute and emotionally absorbing, this is a heartfelt read' DAILY MAIL
'A wonderfully evocative, immersive novel that brings 50s London to life, from the smog and the nightlife to attitudes towards women . . . a vivid, absorbing and ultimately uplifting read' SUNDAY EXPRESS

A fabulous book, don't miss this one.
Pop back to the late ‘50s when post-war Britain was still healing from a savage war. Many people who survived were left with scars, and many were left with dreams.
This trip down memory lane captivates the essence, where women wanted more, but men wanted marriage rules to stay the same.
Edie Butt basically ‘does a runner’, and nobody can blame her! Join Edie on her adventures as Owen Moylan weaves a delightful tale of life’s ups and downs.
This book is perfection.
I enjoyed every word.

Beautiful 2nd novel!
Absolutely loved this second novel from Julie Owen Moylan. I thoroughly enjoyed her first (That Green Eyed Girl) so was really looking forward to this. The characters are so beautifully written, and their stories will stay with me long after I finished listening! The narrator is fabulous!

Enjoyable and vivid
Easy reading - set in 1950s London three women connect at the same lodging house. Men are the rather stereotypical nasty characters in the book, it’s all a bit one dimensional but the strong female characters keep you interested

No substance
Although this novel was supposed to be centred around 3 women, it really only focuses on Edie. Following her from a working girl to getting married to a bully. Continually going back and forth 2 -4 years to present, it had no substance, no real story line. I found it a struggle to finish. There was nothing remarkable about Edie and nothing remarkable about the story. Stereotyped characters from the 1950s. A very dull read indeed. Avoid.
