About this listen

Lovelace was once merely a ship's artificial intelligence. When she wakes up in a new body following a total system shutdown and reboot, she has to start over in a synthetic body, in a world where her kind are illegal. She's never felt so alone. But she's not alone, not really.

Pepper, one of the engineers who risked life and limb to reinstall Lovelace, is determined to help her adjust to her new world. Because Pepper knows a thing or two about starting over.

Together Pepper and Lovey will discover that, huge as the galaxy may be, it's anything but empty. The Long Way to a Small, Angry Planet introduced listeners to the incredible imagination of Becky Chambers and has been nominated for any number of awards and accolades, including the Baileys Prize for Women's Fiction, the Tiptree Award, the Kitschies Golden Tentacle and the Arthur C. Clarke Award.

A Closed and Common Orbit is the stand-alone sequel to The Long Way to a Small, Angry Planet and is perfect for fans of Firefly, Joss Whedon, Mass Effect and Star Wars.

Brilliant follow up book.

I was disappointed initially with this book as it wasn't about the Wayfarer and it's crew. Instead about peripheral characters from the first book. This book somehow manages to mix events in current time with a back story of one of the characters. Usually this is irritating and loses the momentum of the story, but not in this case. The two stories are intertwined, and have excellent character development.

My new sci fi favourite

An excellent sci fi book, really well read. Love the characters, the environment and the moments of humour. I can't wait for the next book from this author.

No as good as first

The story was good overall, thouhg I do believe part one was better. I preferred the parts of the story relating to Jane and Owl over those about Sidra and Pepper. I just felt they were more engaging.

AI story telling at its best

I was a bit taken a black when i found out this was not direct follow on from the first book. However, as an avid fan AI stories it was a delightful surprise to find that this was the central core (no pun intended) of the two stories within this book.
Using the first book to lay the foundations of a complex cosmos teeming with life, Chambers has the time to go into the complexities faced by an AI in an organic dominant world, where their discoveries add extra flavour to the universe.
Excellent performance by Patricia Rodriguez once again she breathes life into every character.

Loved it!

My first reaction in beginning to listen to this was I would have liked there to be more characters common with first book but as I got further into the book I began to fall in love with the new characters, I grew to love them all but I especially loved Tak.

Another great character driven story from Becky where I cared about every one of the characters that the book focused on and that's rare for a book to do. The narration was once again great. I can't wait to read/listen the next one when it comes out and probably anything else Becky writes after that.

Even better than Book 1

I loved Book 1 and this, despite leaving most of those characters behind was even better. Several teary moments at the end! This series seems to be about tolerance, acceptance, empathy, finding one's place and purpose, and many other things. There are also moments where characters have to act against someone's ill but for their own good. As I get further into the series I am seeing deeper things to chew on.

Great Book.

Both the universe and the story are undoubtedly result of a briliant mind. Oh and the narration.. I couldn't imagine a better one.
I finished this book sitting on a train and trying to get some rest. I can't honestly remember the last time I cried but the ending of this book actually made me take my glasses off and wipe the tears from my eyes. I would never imagine getting this emotional over a story involving an AI. So thank you to both Becky and Patricia for this amazing experience.

A pleasant suprise

Any additional comments?

At first I was disappointed that the full cast of book 1 were not in this one but as the story developed it became a delicate and feeling look at the progression from childhood to adult on more than the obvious level. A pleasant and satisfying read and I hope that there will be a 3rd.

Brilliant. Just brilliant

I can't wait for my children to be old enough to read this. Hope no-one tries to turn this into a movie.
