Summary
Witness the fate of beloved heroes and notorious foes in the heart-stopping conclusion to V.E. Schwab's New York Times best-selling Shades of Magic trilogy.
The precarious equilibrium among the four Londons has reached its breaking point. Once brimming with the red vivacity of magic, darkness casts a shadow over the Maresh Empire, leaving a space for another London to rise.
Kell begins to waver under the pressure of competing loyalties. Meanwhile, an ancient enemy returns to claim a crown and a fallen hero is desperate to save a decaying world.
Critic reviews
“A Darker Shade of Magic is smart, funny and sexy...and Schwab keeps the excitement coming with roller-coaster plot twists that establish her as, perhaps, the natural successor to Diana Wynne Jones's contemporary fantasy crown.” (The Independent)

Wonderful story
A wonderful trilogy that I’ll listen to again and again... as long as I can focus on the story and not the truly dreadful narration. There’s a red London, a grey London and a white London but no American London,so why use American narrators? To make matters worse, the two narrators make each of the characters sound completely different, which is ridiculous! Despite this, the story is absorbing and I will definitely listen to more from this author.

Great tale!Loved every bit of it
Sometimes narration irked a bit, but the story and the characters outweighed that and didn’t take from my overall enjoyment of the book. Hope there’s more.

Great ending to a really fun series.
Schwab is now one of my favourite authors, I like her characters and love the way she weaves a story. This was a fitting ending to the shades of magic series and I hope we'll get some other stories from this world in the future.
There is one bit of torture in this book that I couldn't listen to but I just skipped to the next chapter and it was gone. It was from a characters past that we knew about so I already knew it was coming and didn't feel that I needed to listen to it.
Great narration again from the two narrators I'm used to their accents now so they fitted the book well.

A feat of endurance
Loved the first book, but the second two were hard to get through. This last one was much too long, with ideas repeated too many times. I think the whole story would be good as a tv series though, as minor characters could benefit from better development and cheesy dialogue could be improved upon. I got used to Kate Reading’s narration, but not that of M Kramer; I felt his narration was over dramatised and his English accents were horrid. They made it hard to like the characters, especially Rye. I tried to ignore it, but bad pronunciation constantly drew me out of the story. It really contributed to my overall displeasure in listening to this book. I think maybe it would be better to get a Brit to rerecord the books and to have the same person voice all of them. The narrator of the first book was good, but I wasn’t keen on his narration of Lilah, so maybe a completely new narrator would be better. I’ve seen so, so many people lamenting the quality of the narration, that I can’t believe it still hasn’t been rerecorded. Come on Audible, sort it out!

Brilliant.
I’ve listened to all 3 books back to back and this one just tied everything together. Throughout all 3, the relationships created between the characters are truly felt and unbelievably powerful.
I actually laughed out loud at the Princes response on so many occasions but I cried at so many points too! A true adventure which I was totally hooked on!!!
Absolutely brilliant and just thank you!

An ending
this book closes out the second book. but it would have been able to be in one book as they are not only the same series but the same story.

Awful narators
I read the first two but thought I would get the audio book of the third. I have no idea why they got two American narrators to do this book, found them both very irritating and will definitely not listen to anything they narrate from now on. Story was good but think I would have preferred the first book to be a standalone.

My least favourite of the three
The performances were good, but I finished this book only because I felt like I had to, as I enjoyed the first two. Although I like the character development, this one dragged on a little too long for me.
