Summary

It's 1984. The miners' strike is dividing the country. In a struggling coal-mining town, the miners and their families are living at the edge of their resources. On the 14th of December, five miners break ranks to travel to Nottingham and work. For those who stay behind, this is an unforgivable betrayal.

Twenty-three years later, a young woman is asking the police to trace her missing father. Miner Mick Prentice vanished, never to be seen again. Soon, DI Karen Pirie and DS Phil Parharta find themselves investigating a forgotten disappearance.

Good story but unfinished ending

I stuck with this book as really not sure about the narrator - guess I've been spoilt by Sean Barrett and Steven Pacey who are excellent. Good story with the background running alongside, came together well towards the end but very disappointed with the unfinished ending - a lot of guessing left with the story on both sides.

All in all ok, but not sure I would recommend as a great read compared to some of the many books I have listened to. Don't want to put anyone off but a 3 star from me.

Thoroughly engrossing

Really enjoyed the various strands of this story from Fife coalfields to Italy, miners' houses to castles and seamlessly woven together. Not sure about the ending was justice done or not depends on your point of view. Great storytelling. Great narrator.

Good story

Found this one to be better than the first book and a nice build up to the series.

A really great crime novel

Great plot and characters - love Karen Pirie especially. Val McDermid is my new favourite crime fiction author.

Great storyline

I really enjoyed this book. Lots of twists and turns leading you all over, though I did feel it ended quite abruptly.
Well narrated apart from a few mispronounced place names, and I didn't like her pronunciation of Catriona, but that's a minor complaint. Having lived in Kirkcaldy from the age of 11, it was interesting to hear about places I knew as a teenager.
I really enjoy Val McDermid's books.

Great story shame about the narration.

So many place names were pronounced incorrectly that it was really annoying. Glen Isla with the 's' sounded was possibly the worst. Towns in Fife had the stress on the wrong part of the word. The Italian was awful. I listened to the entire book because I liked the story so much.

Too long

Too long and probably a better read than listen. Would not recommend it as an audible

Good story but …….

Enjoyed the tale but the several mispronunciations by the teller took the gloss off slightly. Especially pronouncing N.U.M. As numb several times, outrageous. Methil as Meeeethil and Aplastic Anemia as Ahhhplastic Anemia. Education and rehearsal required.
