Summary

In a world where magic has disappeared, rival nations vie for power in a continent devastated by war.

When a young farm girl named Livia demonstrates magical powers for the first time in a century, there are many across the land that will kill to obtain her power. Duke Gothelm's tallymen, the blood-soaked Qeltine Brotherhood, and cynical mercenary Josten Cade: All are searching for Livia and the power she wields.

But Livia finds that guardians can come from the most unlikely places...and that the old gods are returning to a world they abandoned.

A Feisty, Pacey Mix to Start!

As soon as I saw the title of this book I knew I was going to read it! Who could resist the "War of the Archons", it had to be a remake of a seventies Dr Who episode didn't it? Of course that couldn't be much further from the truth, this is an excellent start to an epic fantasy series which to me had hints of Abercrombie in the characters and Feist in the world-building. As Ford is a new author to me and this is only the first book of the series I won't go any further than that but I'm definitely feeling flutters of excitement about this one that it could become a firm favourite as it unfolds.

Speaking of Abercrombie, one of his favourite narrators, and mine, is the wonderful and sadly under-used Steven Pacey and in a very understated way Derek Perkins who narrates here reminded me of him. He's not quite such a performer but his narration is very easy on the ear and he does give the characters a suitable amount of personality each.

So there is much to get excited about for how this series will develop, if I'm hinting at Abercrombie, Feist and Pacey then I'm admitting very high hopes. It won't suit everyone. While I personally enjoyed the multiple point of view approach interlaced with the mystical back story of the Archons and how they are brought together it does switch about a fair amount.

I'd definitely recommend giving it a try though, there is a good mix of ingredients; good action, decent world-building, a little comedy, grandiose fantasy and a couple of characters I think could, in time, prove to be quite a famous fantasy duo.

not the best but not the worst

This story was jarring at points. found it hard to see who the bad guys were and then random vivid sex scenes.

this was compared to Sanderson, I think that was a mistake this is nothing like his work. don't think I will be reading more of the serriies.

Interesting, but graphic

In depth descriptions of violence and sex, with lots of swearing. Interesting story, but too graphic for me

A great story but felt rushed.

More character development needed. The story runs at such a quick pace, you barely get to know them. However an enjoyable book none-the-less.

Quite good for a freebie

Kinda slow start, a lot of stories intertwined till it makes sense, but it's worth it. The narrator did a superb job. Comparison with Abercrombie? I don't know, Abercrombie is a master with building characters, which is not the case here. It is gory, too much at the point of describing torturing and killing children. It could go without it, it doesn't do any good for the story value.
Other than that it is a decent plot, interesting twists, as I said - quite good foe a freebie

Took a while to get into but worth persevering

I nearly returned the book in the first hour of listening as I’d had to restart three times to take in the story. But I’m glad I stuck with it. A combination of three character storylines come together at the end, which I found to be a bit of a let down after the journey of the characters. But there are some really lovely moments and some so sad I nearly cried. I’ll look for more books by the author.

competent fantasy

decent enough story, covering some well trodden and predictable paths, in the sub-Abercrombie genre. good for a long car journey, and well read by the stalwart Derek Perkins. competent world building, but the writing doesn't lift this tale above the average.

Mixed feelings

I would recommend this book but only at the bottom of your list. It’s okay At parts I was loving it, at parts I was bored.

There are no heroines or hero’s in this book that you feel passionate about. The characters and their stories as spread thin and are introduced as per their current situation, with hardly any backstory. Only in the last 30 minutes does it bring it all together. But that ‘finale’ isn’t even that nail biting.

I don’t know. The general story certainly takes you to another world (which I enjoy). Learning all the different cultures and way of life. It is easy to listen to. And you can’t help but want to finish it.

I think maybe it’s missing that ‘passion’. Fights are quick, saucy scenes are about 2 sentences, battles are sudden and kind of ‘where did that come from’, there are no heartfelt moments- even when people die. It’s just done and you move on quickly.
