Summary

A Girl from Zanzibar is a riveting modern immigration story for a brave, new, and globalized world. Current events, murky international finance, intrigue, and a search for self are played out in the story of Marcella DiSouza. Marcella is a smart, ambitious young woman of Portuguese Indian-Arab background, who follows a dangerous path from her home in Zanzibar to the shadowy business world of London to a teaching position in a small Vermont college.

With a heart-stopping plot, written in spare, luminous and elegant prose A Girl from Zanzibar, is reminiscent of the novels of John Le Carre and Graham Greene.

Editor reviews

Roger King's exciting 2002 novel follows the tumultuous journey of the beautiful, driven Marcella D'Souza. She shows an impressive talent for business from an early age, which leads her to becoming a successful real estate entrepreneur in London. However, her personal entanglements soon find her in jail, and when she gets out and finds herself in Vermont, she finally gets a moment to reflect on her wild life. Helen Stern gives a lovely performance with her calm, British accented voice serving as a nice contrast to the tale of this brilliant and complicated heroine.
