About this listen

From the founder of the worldwide 30% Club campaign comes a career book for women in a transforming world who don't just want to lean in, but instead, shatter the paradigm as we know it.

‘I absolutely love her, I think she’s such a force for good’ Pandora Sykes, The High Low

In A Good Time to be a Girl, Helena Morrissey sets out how we might achieve the next big breakthrough towards a truly inclusive modern society.

Drawing on her experience as a City CEO, mother of nine, and founder of the influential 30% Club which campaigns for gender-balanced UK company boards, her manifesto for new ways of working, living, loving and raising families is for everyone, not just women. Making a powerful case for diversity and difference in any workplace, she shows how, together, we can develop smarter thinking and broader definitions of success. Gender balance, in her view, is an essential driver of economic prosperity and part of the solution to the many problems we face today.

Her approach is not aimed merely at training a few more women in working practices that have outlived their usefulness. Instead, this book sets out a way to reinvent the game – not at the expense of men but in ways that are right and relevant for a digital age. It is a powerful guide to success for us all.

Critic reviews

‘Morrissey is unusual and her book is essentially about why that is a good thing; why people who don’t fit the mould should be valued for that, rather than forced to conform … a refreshing change from the niggling cult of female self-improvement, which starts from the premise that women are probably doing it all wrong’ Gaby Hinsliff, Observer

‘A manifesto for career-minded women’ Sarah Baxter, Sunday Times

‘What supplies extra authority is where Morrissey is coming from – someone who has reached the summit and who did so while being mother to nine children. All credit to her. Onwards and upwards’ Evening Standard

‘Ms Morrissey’s tone is helpful in the increasingly irascible debate on gender equality … worth listening to’ Financial Times

‘A heartfelt manifesto for a more humane and inclusive form of capitalism’ Ruth Sunderland, Mail On Sunday

‘Morrissey is a suffragist like Millicent Fawcett, convinced that patient social reform can be brought by good women, and men’ Allison Pearson, Daily Telegraph

‘She makes a great case for ditching the dither, fixing your eyes on the prize, and asking for help where needed and promotion where desired too… I loved her positivity and push for collective female focus’ Helen Brown, Daily Mail

Insightful and surprising

I loved this book and the messages it held. It was refreshing to see the emphasis be on diversity of thought, merit and making common sense changes that benifit everyone, rather than treating diversity as a tick box exercise or a chance to virtue signal. The personal story aspect and observations from all members of the family really enhanced the listen too. The author's achievements and how she managed to achieve them were really inspiring and the ideas discussed gave me lots to think about. The narration was clear and well paced, and pleasant to listen to.

Very engaging book.

Very engaging book, I admire HM for her achievements but most of all for her investment performance. I bought the paper version for one of my nieces.

very good, recent book to read on the topic

good insight into the progress we've made and what still needs to be done. i like that Helena takes the perspective of playing to your strengths anf emphasizes that there are predominant feminine strengths which can be brought to the table. good new perspective on this.

An inspiring read (for everyone)

A truly inspiring read with honest reflections and many questions remaining unanswered. truly stimulated many of my own reflections and offers continual challenge to the reader(s) as to how there is still much work to do to shape our future. wouldhughly recommend it to all those who are open minded and wanting to grow, especially to those who are initially cynical!

It is a good time to be a girl

This is a short, modern account of one woman's incredible journey. I enjoyed listening to it and found myself often agreeing with the author. She talks common sense and although her situation is completely unique, there is no doubt that this is a good time to be a girl.

Fake Feminism

Good GOD. I am... agape. I did NOT just listen to over half of this book, listening to her talk about female empowerment & gender inequality in the workplace.. To find out she VOTED FOR BREXIT. I will be processing my shock and derision over the coming days during social isolation, you know this time during which the Brexit government have yet to put in place any safety precautions during the worst pandemic in living memory. It is almost hilarious, yet terrifying that this woman have the gall to dissect diversity of thought, and diversity in general, as a rich white straight non disabled woman who went on to vote for a government that actively persecutes marginalised people. Ha. Honestly, what? I turned it off when she went on about people deplatforming her views & you know what it's time to wrap up this review. Wish I could give this minus stars. Want to say I'd love to know why this is so highly rated, sadly know the answer. AVOID IF YOU HAVE A CONSCIENCE. Audible, you tricked me. Worst £3 ever spent.
