Cristabel Seagrave has always wanted her life to be a story, but there are no girls in the books in her dusty family library. For an unwanted orphan who grows into an unmarriageable young woman, there is no place at all for her in a traditional English manor. When Royal Academy painting student Lucy Coover trips over a naked man passed out in an East End alley, she does the decent thing. She covers him up and fetches help. Trouble is, she can't banish his muscular form from her dreams as easily. Compelled to capture every detail, she creates a stunning portrait but is forced to sell it when the rent comes due. Chemist Elizabeth Zott is not your average woman. In fact, Elizabeth Zott would be the first to point out that there is no such thing. But it's the early 1960s and her all-male team at Hastings Research Institute take a very unscientific view of equality. Story
Canon Daniel Clement is rector of Champton. He has been there for eight years, living at the rectory alongside his widowed mother—opinionated, fearless, ever-so-slightly annoying Audrey—and his two dachshunds, Cosmo and Hilda. When Daniel announces a plan to install a lavatory in church, the parish is suddenly (and unexpectedly) divided: as lines are drawn in the community, long-buried secrets come dangerously close to destroying the apparent calm of Champton. And then Anthony Bowness is found dead at the back of the church, stabbed in the neck with a pair of secateurs.

The Honourable Catherine Elford - Kitty - is presented with an awful choice. Either she is cast off, penniless, by her stepbrother, or she marries the handsome Earl of Ledbury, who would be perfect were he not a serial womaniser. Ledbury has only ever courted other men’s wives and does not want a wife of his own. However, Kitty’s generous dowry, which will keep him from selling his beloved racehorses, proves too tempting.

A Regency romance with an unusual heroine
- By Kate @MLHearingThings on 13-10-19
Summary
Pre-order summer 2022’s biggest historical debut!
The season is about to begin—and there’s not a minute to lose….
Kitty Talbot needs a fortune.
Or rather, she needs a husband who has a fortune. This is 1818 after all, and only men have the privilege of seeking their own riches.
With just 12 weeks until Kitty and her sisters are made homeless, launching herself into London society is the only avenue open to her. And Kitty must use every ounce of cunning and ingenuity she possesses to climb the ranks.
The only one to see through her plans is the worldly Lord Radcliffe, and he is determined to thwart her at any cost.
Can Kitty secure a fortune and save her sisters from poverty? There is not a day to lose and no one—not even a lord—will stand in her way….
Critic reviews
"This book captivated me. What a sassy, witty, delicious tale. Kitty Talbot is a fabulous, fearless heroine." (Sophie Kinsella, The Party Crasher)
"A thoroughly modern heroine with wit, style and energy…a formidable Austentacious talent." (Janice Hallett, The Appeal)
"Plucky, witty and bright, with one dainty slipper poised in the present and another one firmly rooted in the past. Readers of Jane Austen and fans of Bridgeton will swoon." (Nita Prose, author of The Maid)

Disappointing read
When you’ve read Georgette Heyer, this just doesn’t cut it. A set of one dimensional characters with a tediously predicable storyline and complete absence of humour. I therefore have no idea why this book has garnered so much attention in the press. The narration is flat which makes a boring story more boring than it was already. I abandoned it after 14 chapters and during a sleepless night as silence was preferable to another minute of this farrago of nonsense. Avoid!!

A witty and fun Regency drama
A witty and fun Regency period drama following the vivacious Kitty as she determines to find a wealthy husband in order to save her family from ruin. As the eldest, it is down to her to save them from debts left by her father. However, Kitty doesn't have access to the finer society parties due to her birth, so she relies on her wily ambitions to secure an alternative entrance into popular society. Her nemesis Radcliffe stands in the way, but soon finds himself embroiled in a plan to help her access the finer parties. There are plenty of nods to Austen's Pride and Prejudice and all the wit of Bridgerton. The focus remains on Kitty and Radcliffe and gives both their narrative POVs. There is much witty repartee between the pair. A thoroughly fun read. #aladysguidetofortunehunting #ladysguide #Sophieirwin #regencyperiod #drama #romance #theton #fortunehunting #historical #netgalley

A great listen
I thoroughly enjoyed listening to this book, so much so that I demolished it in 2 days. However, like the previous review I did find the narrating too slow and had to put the speed to 1.4x
Just over half way through it became apparent what the outcome would most likely be, however it didn’t make it any less enjoyable to me. I look forward to reading more from the author!

A fun light read but narration dreadfully slow
A fun read with a good female lead but the narrator read painfully slowly and I had to listen at 1.3x to be at a normal pace. Nothing wrong with the narration otherwise but if I had been unable to speed the playback up I would have given up.
